Wi-Fi signal, router or device limits, other network use, and test conditions can all reduce measured speed. Start by checking for an outage, then compare Wi-Fi with a controlled Ethernet test near the router. That comparison helps locate the bottleneck; it does not, by itself, prove that the provider’s connection is healthy.
Why fiber internet can feel slow
A plan’s advertised or maximum wired speed is not a promise that every device will reach that speed. The result depends on the complete path from the provider to the device: router capability, Ethernet ports or Wi-Fi, the computer or phone, software, distance, walls and other obstacles, interference, and concurrent network use.

It also matters what “slow” means. Low download or upload speed, high latency, dropped connections, and one sluggish website are different symptoms and may have different causes. A speed test measures performance to a test endpoint under particular conditions; it does not guarantee that every site or app will respond equally quickly.
Work out where the slowdown occurs
Before changing equipment, note whether the problem affects one device or several, whether it happens on Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and whether it is constant or limited to certain times. Record whether the main complaint is slow downloads, slow uploads, lag, or disconnections. These observations help distinguish a device or coverage problem from a broader service issue.

Check for an outage or service notice
Check your provider’s app, outage page, or support page for a local disruption. The FCC advises consumers to ask their ISP whether an outage or service disruption may be affecting speed and to contact the ISP for troubleshooting guidance: FCC Consumer Guide.
Run a controlled wired test
- Connect a capable computer by Ethernet to a LAN port on the router. Use a cable and adapters that can support the speed you are trying to measure.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy activity on the test computer and, if practical, reduce other heavy network use during the test.
- Run a reputable speed test. If results vary substantially, repeat it under the same conditions.
- Record the date and time, device, wired or Wi-Fi connection, test location, and measured download and upload speeds.
Testing close to the router over Ethernet removes much of the Wi-Fi uncertainty and helps assess the service-and-router path. It is not a definitive diagnosis of the provider’s network: the computer, cable, adapter, router port, software, browser, background applications, and test endpoint can still limit the result.

Google Fiber’s Network Box instructions provide a provider-specific illustration: for a GFiber 1 Gig plan in that setup, the provider says wired upload and download should be close to 1,000 Mbps, while noting that computer age and type, browser, running applications, and other factors can lower a test result. This is not a universal target for other providers, plans, routers, or devices. See Google Fiber’s Network Box installation and testing guidance.
If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow
A stronger wired result points toward Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or the wireless device rather than proving that every part of the service is problem-free. Try the following checks before buying equipment.

- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to deliver the full speed of your internet plan across a medium to large home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 6.5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Move nearer and retest. If speed improves close to the router, distance or obstacles are likely affecting that location.
- Improve router placement. Put it in a central, open position, raised off the floor and away from cabinets or substantial obstructions.
- Compare devices. If only an older or less capable device is slow, its Wi-Fi hardware or software may be the limiting factor.
- Check concurrent use and interference. Multiple active devices can affect performance; nearby radio sources and physical barriers can also make wireless service less reliable.
- Check mesh placement and link. A wireless extender needs a usable connection back to the main router. Google Fiber suggests placing a wireless extender about halfway between the router and the farthest area needing coverage; an extender placed too far away can inherit a weak upstream signal.
Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi speed guidance discusses device age, distance, simultaneous use, router placement, obstacles, and extender placement. Wired Ethernet generally provides the strongest connection. A mesh system is worth considering only when the wired test is healthy and the evidence points to a coverage gap; it will not fix an outage, low wired throughput, or a device with a speed-limited port.

First make sure the test setup can carry the intended speed. Check the computer’s Ethernet port or adapter, the router’s LAN port, the cable, and any USB connection used by an adapter. Close background applications, update device software or drivers where appropriate, and, if available, repeat the test with another capable wired device.

Requirements depend on the plan and equipment. In its multi-gig guidance, Google Fiber discusses device, cable, adapter or port, and USB-port limits; its example recommends Cat 6 or higher and describes port requirements for its own service. Those specifications are not a blanket requirement for every fiber plan. See Google Fiber’s guidance on using your own router for its service-specific connection and compatibility details.
If results remain unexpectedly low after checking the test device and equipment, check outage status again and contact the ISP. Share the recorded results, times, test device, and connection method so support can assess the issue. Do not open, unplug, clean, or attempt to repair optical-fiber components based on generic troubleshooting advice; installation and fault indicators vary by provider and equipment.

Choose a remedy for the layer that is failing
| Remedy | Most useful when | What it cannot establish or fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wired speed test | You need to compare Wi-Fi with a connection near the router. | It does not alone prove the ISP connection is healthy; device, port, cable, and test conditions still matter. |
| Router repositioning | Wi-Fi is weak in some rooms but better near the router. | It cannot repair an outage or low wired throughput. |
| Mesh extender or system | A wired test is healthy and a coverage gap is evident. | Results depend on compatibility, placement, and the link back to the main router; it cannot fix a provider-side fault. |
| Router replacement | Evidence indicates the current router is the bottleneck. | A new router must be compatible with the ISP and plan and support the required ports; it will not fix a line fault or device limitation. |
| ISP support | Wired results remain unusually low, an outage is reported, or a provider-side fault is suspected. | No consumer accessory can correct a fault on the provider’s network. |
Google Fiber notes that its included router is selected for its service performance and that a customer-owned router needs to meet the plan’s requirements. Check compatibility before replacing provider equipment.
