Kong: Survivor Instinct is set shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong. That is the relative timeline placement given in the game’s official listing; it does not establish a specific in-universe year or city.
Where the game fits in the timeline
The official Steam listing for Kong: Survivor Instinct places its story shortly after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong. Nintendo’s publisher-provided description uses the same placement. Neither description gives a precise date or says how much time has passed.
That makes the film the firm chronological anchor: the game follows it, but the available official descriptions do not support assigning the story an exact year.
Is Kong: Survivor Instinct canon?
7Levels co-founders Krzysztof Król and Paweł Biela describe the game as an official, canon story developed in coordination with Legendary. In an interview with Toho Kingdom, Król said the team worked to keep the game consistent with released Monsterverse material and other projects in development. Biela likewise said the developers could not contradict canon and worked with Legendary’s creative team.

These are statements from the game’s developers, rather than a direct interview with Legendary. The game’s official store descriptions independently present it as an official Monsterverse story.
What happens in the game
The story follows David, an oil-rig worker searching for his daughter, Stacy, after a Titan attack devastates a city. The player moves through damaged districts, encounters other survivors, scavenges supplies and faces human and monster threats. The game’s descriptions feature Kong, Abaddon, other superspecies, Monarch-inspired ORCA Σ technology and the mercenary group known as the Hyenas, led by Alan Jonah.

Rather than following Monarch scientists or the Titans, the story uses David’s rescue mission to show the consequences of a Titan event from a civilian’s point of view. Król described David as an outsider to the Titan world—a different perspective from the investigators and Monarch personnel often followed in the films.
What the timeline does not confirm
No exact year or named city
The official descriptions refer to a devastated city but do not name it or assign the events an in-universe calendar year. Specific year or location claims should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as established continuity.

Godzilla’s absence is unexplained in the game’s confirmed canon
Asked why Godzilla does not appear to fight Kong, Abaddon and Tiamat, co-founder Paweł Biela said the developers had an internal explanation but would not reveal it because a future Monsterverse project might address the gap. He also cautioned that only what is actually in the game can be considered canon. There is no confirmed explanation to add to the timeline.
Its placement relative to The New Empire is not specified
The Associated Press describes Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong. However, the game’s official descriptions do not say whether its story takes place before or after The New Empire. Its placement relative to that film remains unconfirmed.
