There is no single material that replaces rare earth elements across electric motors and electronics. In motors, manufacturers can use ferrite or AlNiCo magnets, or change the motor design so it does not need permanent magnets. In electronics, the answer depends on the component: a magnet, a display phosphor and a semiconductor do different jobs and need different solutions. Each option comes with tradeoffs in performance, size, efficiency, cost or readiness.
How can an electric motor avoid rare earth magnets?
There are two different engineering approaches: replace the magnet material, or choose a motor architecture that does not rely on permanent magnets. The distinction matters because changing a magnet is not a one-for-one swap: the motor may need a different design to meet its performance and packaging needs.
Use a different permanent-magnet material
Ferrite and aluminum-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) are established rare-earth-free magnet families. The European Commission’s REFREEPERMAG project documented work to adapt these families and develop other rare-earth-free magnets. Whether one can work in a particular motor depends on the magnetic performance required, the motor’s size and weight constraints, operating conditions and manufacturing needs. The available evidence does not establish either family as a universal drop-in replacement for neodymium-based magnets in traction motors.
Choose a motor architecture without permanent magnets
Induction, electrically excited synchronous and switched-reluctance motors can operate without rare-earth permanent magnets. The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) identifies electrically excited synchronous machines among rare-earth-free alternatives for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These designs shift the comparison from magnet chemistry to the whole motor and drive system. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says induction motors have lower power density and overall efficiency than interior permanent-magnet (IPM) motors, while also citing reliability and high starting torque as advantages. Switched-reluctance motors can be rugged and inexpensive to manufacture, but DOE identifies noise, vibration, lower efficiency and additional control requirements as challenges in vehicle traction. See DOE’s electric motors research overview.
How do the main motor alternatives compare?
| Path | What changes | Key tradeoffs or evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ferrite or AlNiCo magnets | Permanent-magnet composition | Established rare-earth-free magnet families; suitability depends on motor requirements. Not demonstrated as universal traction-motor drop-ins. European Commission CORDIS |
| Induction motor | Motor architecture; no permanent magnet | DOE reports lower power density and overall efficiency than IPM motors, alongside reliability and high starting torque. DOE |
| Electrically excited synchronous motor | Rotor field is produced without a permanent magnet | Identified by JRC as a rare-earth-free BEV motor alternative. JRC |
| Switched-reluctance motor | Rotor and torque-production architecture | DOE cites ruggedness and manufacturing advantages, as well as noise, vibration, efficiency and control challenges. DOE |
| Iron-nitride or nanocrystalline concepts | New permanent-magnet material or soft-magnet design | Project and prototype development evidence, not proof of broad commercial availability. DOE |
Can manufacturers use less rare earth in existing magnets?
Yes. Reducing rare-earth content is different from eliminating it. DOE identifies grain-boundary diffusion and redesigning motors to operate at lower temperatures as ways to reduce or eliminate dysprosium in neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets. These approaches can lower demand for a rare earth while retaining an NdFeB magnet; they do not necessarily remove rare earths from the magnet altogether. What can replace rare earths in electronics?
Start with the component, not the broad label “electronics.” Permanent magnets in motors or other devices, phosphors in lighting and displays, and semiconductor materials serve distinct functions. A substitute for one is not automatically suitable for another.
Magnets, phosphors and LEDs
The JRC assessment examines materials including europium, terbium and yttrium in lighting, and neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium in permanent magnets, among other low-carbon technology applications. Its summary found no complete direct commercial replacement for the critical materials it assessed in phosphors, LEDs and permanent magnets at the time of the assessment. It identifies component substitution and material efficiency as ways to reduce demand, rather than naming one replacement material that works across these uses. The finding applies to the technologies assessed and the assessment’s publication period; it is not a claim about every electronic component or all later developments. Read the JRC assessment.

Semiconductors and power electronics
Gallium and germanium are critical materials used in semiconductors, but they are not rare earth elements. DOE discusses silicon carbide (SiC) power electronics in electric-machine research; SiC has a role in power electronics, not as a replacement for a rare-earth magnet. The DOE critical minerals and materials overview covers gallium and germanium, while its overview of next-generation electric machines discusses electric-machine research.
How mature are newer rare-earth-free magnet concepts?
Iron nitride and nanocrystalline materials are development paths, not evidence of widespread deployment. DOE’s 2024 Critical Materials Accelerator selections describe $2,699,810 in federal funding for Niron Magnetics to design, analyze and fabricate a prototype motor using iron-nitride permanent-magnet material. The project page describes proposed performance outcomes as conditional on success, so these are targets rather than independently verified results. DOE has also described a rare-earth-free flux-switching motor project using nanocrystalline soft magnets. These project records show active development, but do not by themselves establish commercial availability, scale, cost or durability.

Does recycling replace rare earth materials?
No. Recycling recovers material already in products and can return it to supply chains; it does not substitute a different material or remove the need for rare earths in a component. DOE describes efforts to recover rare earths from electronic scrap and recirculate NdFeB magnets, while the International Energy Agency (IEA) points to growing end-of-life volumes from electric-vehicle motors, wind turbines and electronic waste as a recycling opportunity. DOE’s Electronics Scrap Recycling Advancement Prize states an award ceiling of up to $4 million in 2025; that is program funding available, not a measured recycling result. See the DOE prize announcement and the IEA’s rare earth elements analysis.
How to choose the right alternative
- If the goal is to remove rare earths from a magnet: evaluate ferrite or AlNiCo against the motor’s performance, size, weight, operating conditions and manufacturing requirements.
- If the goal is to avoid permanent magnets: compare induction, electrically excited synchronous and switched-reluctance architectures across the complete motor and drive system, including efficiency, power density, noise and controls.
- If the goal is to reduce use without changing the motor architecture: investigate lower rare-earth content or designs that reduce dysprosium requirements, while recognizing that this is not necessarily full substitution.
- If the component is in electronics: identify whether it is a magnet, phosphor, LED or semiconductor before considering alternatives; there is no universal “rare-earth-free electronics” material.
- If the goal is supply resilience: consider recycling as a way to recover material, distinct from replacing it.
The cited sources do not provide one comparable market-share or performance dataset spanning these magnet families, motor architectures and electronics applications. A universal replacement percentage would therefore be misleading.
