Neither laptop is the universal winner. Choose the MacBook Air M5 if your essential apps and peripherals work with macOS; choose a Surface Laptop for Business if your work depends on Windows or your organization is standardized around Windows deployment and support. Before deciding, identify the exact Surface processor and screen size, then compare software compatibility, management needs, configuration, ports, and local pricing.
Which laptop fits your work?
For everyday work, the operating system and the applications you rely on matter more than the product name. Check support for each essential app, plug-in, device driver, and workflow on the exact computer you plan to buy. Surface’s Snapdragon model uses an Arm processor, so confirm that your software and peripherals support that specific configuration with their vendors; the available specifications do not establish compatibility for any particular reader’s setup.
- Choose MacBook Air M5 when macOS supports your required work and you prefer Apple’s laptop line.
- Choose Surface Laptop for Business when you need Windows applications, peripherals, or continuity with a Windows-standardized workplace.
- Pause before choosing either if a critical app, plug-in, or device has not been confirmed for the exact operating system and processor.
“Surface Laptop” covers distinct business models, including Snapdragon and Intel configurations. Do not treat their processors, ports, or specifications as interchangeable.

Battery life: why the figures are not a direct comparison
Apple reports video streaming and wireless web use; Microsoft reports local video playback and active web usage. The different activities, test conditions, and configurations mean the advertised hours cannot establish which laptop lasts longer in comparable real-world use. If battery endurance will decide the purchase, look for independent results for the exact models and workloads you are considering.
Business deployment and device management
When Windows deployment is central
Windows Autopilot supports a Windows deployment workflow that depends on supported Windows, Microsoft Entra ID, and a mobile device management service such as Intune; licensing requirements also apply. Organizations should check their identity, endpoint-management, security, and application setup before selecting Surface. See Microsoft’s Windows Autopilot requirements and Windows device management deployment guide.

When a Mac could fit a Microsoft-managed workplace
A Microsoft-centered organization is not automatically restricted to Windows hardware: Microsoft documents Intune support for macOS enrollment, compliance and security configuration, remote actions, and app deployment. For corporate-owned Macs, Automated Device Enrollment uses Apple Business or Apple School Manager and requires setup such as an Apple MDM push certificate and Apple token. Confirm that the organization’s policies, enrollment workflow, apps, and support capacity cover macOS. See Microsoft’s Intune macOS deployment guide and macOS enrollment guide.

Match memory, storage, and screen size to the job
Compare like for like: screen size, memory, storage, and processor variant. A base configuration on one side is not a fair value comparison with an upgraded configuration on the other. If you routinely keep many demanding apps or large projects open, decide on the memory and storage you need before comparing quotes.
