Tower of Fantasy weapons fall into three broad roles: DPS, Defense, and Support. Those labels describe a weapon’s general job, but they do not tell you everything about how it plays or whether it suits your loadout. Shatter, charge, elemental attributes, weapon skills, and the resonance created by your equipped weapons all matter too.
What do the three weapon roles mean?
The role labels are broad descriptions, not rankings. The community-maintained Tower of Fantasy Wiki’s weapon reference describes DPS as damage-focused, Defense as drawing enemy aggro and mitigating damage, and Support as healing and enhancing allies. The game publisher’s combat overview also frames combat around weapons with distinct attacks and skills, rather than a role label alone.
DPS
A DPS weapon is built around dealing damage. Equipping two or more DPS weapons can contribute to Attack resonance, according to the wiki. The label does not guarantee that every DPS weapon is equally powerful, easy to use, or effective in every mode; those details depend on its kit and the game’s current balance.
Defense
A Defense weapon’s broad purpose is to draw aggro and mitigate damage. Two or more Defense weapons can contribute to Fortitude resonance. This role is not simply another name for high damage, and the label alone does not specify how much protection or team utility a particular weapon provides.

Support
A Support weapon is intended to heal or enhance allies. Two or more Support weapons can contribute to Benediction resonance. The amount and conditions of healing or buffs depend on the individual weapon’s effects, not just its role label.
How weapon roles affect resonance
Resonance is a loadout bonus associated with the roles of the weapons you equip. The cited wiki describes these configurations:

The Tower of Fantasy Index also describes equipping up to three weapons: Tower of Fantasy Index. Treat the names and combinations above as the cited reference’s description, not a guarantee of current numerical bonuses: exact resonance effects can change, and the available official material does not provide a current role-by-role mechanics table. Check the live game client for the active bonuses before building around a specific effect.
What are shatter and charge?
Shatter and charge are weapon attributes, not additional roles. They describe different parts of combat:

- Shatter relates to breaking enemy shields. The wiki describes a higher shatter value as breaking shields faster.
- Charge relates to building weapon charge. When the weapon reaches full charge, you can trigger a discharge.
These attributes can shape a weapon’s practical contribution alongside its role. For example, the role tells you whether it is broadly damage-, defense-, or support-oriented; shatter and charge describe other combat functions. The exact value of each weapon still depends on its kit and the situation.
Role, element, and weapon kit are separate factors
A role is not an element. Weapons also have elemental attributes, which affect damage type and can interact with elemental composition. The cited sources do not establish a complete current account of elemental combinations, so do not assume that a weapon’s role tells you its element or all of its team interactions.

Individual attacks and skills matter as well. The publisher’s combat overview identifies general attacks, dodges, weapon-specific skills, and combination skills. That means two weapons with the same role can still feel very different in play. Consider a weapon’s attack patterns and skills, its shatter and charge values, and how its element fits your other choices rather than selecting by role alone.

Choose based on the contribution you want and the weapons available for your loadout, not on a universal “best type” ranking. A damage-focused setup points toward DPS weapons; a defensive focus toward Defense; and a group-sustain or ally-enhancement focus toward Support. If resonance matters to your plan, account for the roles of all equipped weapons, then assess the actual skills and attributes of each weapon.

No role can be identified as best overall from these broad descriptions. Weapon strength, ease of use, mode fit, and current balance are not settled by the role label, and the available sources do not support a current weapon tier list.
