Start by stabilizing the connection, use Steam’s performance overlay to locate the bottleneck, and then change one setting at a time. Big Picture Mode gives you controls for streaming quality, bandwidth, and resolution; the right balance depends on your phone or tablet, Wi-Fi conditions, and host PC.
Start with the network before changing stream quality
A stream can stutter even when the Android device and host PC are powerful enough if the connection is inconsistent. Steam recommends connecting the host PC to the router over Ethernet where feasible. For the Android client, 5 GHz Wi-Fi is a useful choice when the signal is strong: it can be less affected by interference than 2.4 GHz, but its range is shorter, so distance and obstacles matter.
- Connect the Android device and host PC to the same suitable private home network. Check that router client or wireless isolation is not preventing devices from communicating.
- Wire the host PC to the router if you can. Keep the Android device within reliable Wi-Fi range and try 5 GHz if its signal remains strong.
- Reduce competing network traffic during play. If the signal is weak, try a closer location or improve router placement before buying equipment.

Turn on the performance overlay to identify the problem
Before lowering image quality, enable the Remote Play performance overlay in Steam’s advanced streaming settings and observe it during a session where the problem occurs. Steam says large spikes in the overlay’s cyan line indicate highly variable network time and commonly accompany stutter or freezing. That points toward connection stability rather than proving that resolution or host encoding is the cause.

Find the streaming and advanced client options in Big Picture Mode through the settings icon and In-Home Streaming. Steam client labels and paths can change; if the named path is different in your version, look in the current Remote Play or streaming settings. Steam documents the overlay in its performance overlay guidance.
Adjust quality and resolution only when symptoms call for it
If the connection is stable but the stream remains choppy, lower the streaming quality to a less demanding option such as Balanced or Fast, then test again. This reduces bandwidth demand at the cost of image detail. If needed, Steam documents a 1280×720 resolution limit as a troubleshooting measure in Big Picture Mode—not as a universal recommended resolution for Android phones. A lower resolution can improve smoothness on a constrained setup, but makes the streamed image less detailed.

To find the controls, open Big Picture Mode, choose the settings icon, then In-Home Streaming and the client options for streaming quality or resolution. If your client uses different wording, look under Remote Play or streaming settings for controls such as “Fast” and “Limit resolution.” Steam’s display troubleshooting describes the resolution-limit step.
Set a bandwidth limit by testing upward
A bandwidth limit can keep the stream from demanding more than the connection can reliably deliver. Steam’s suggested-network guidance gives 3 Mbit/s as one possible starting point for tuning: increase the limit until hitches appear, then step back to the last level that worked. Another Steam troubleshooting context recommends beginning at the lowest bandwidth setting and raising it gradually; “Automatic” restores default behavior. These are tuning procedures, not a prescribed Android profile or a promise that one rate will suit every network.

- In Big Picture Mode, open the settings icon and go to In-Home Streaming or the current Remote Play streaming settings.
- Choose the bandwidth control, commonly labeled “Limit bandwidth,” and select a low starting limit. Steam’s suggested-network article identifies 3 Mbit/s as a possible starting point, while its troubleshooting guidance also describes starting at the lowest setting.
- Stream a game and raise the limit in small increments. If hitches begin, return to the last stable level. Select “Automatic” to restore Steam’s default behavior.
The available headroom varies with the network and other traffic, so judge the setting by the stream’s behavior rather than treating the starting value as a target. See Steam’s suggested network settings and network troubleshooting.
Investigate host encoding if framerate remains low
If network timing looks steady and lowering quality or bandwidth does not resolve low framerate, test the host PC’s hardware encoding options. Encoding performance depends on the host’s hardware, so compare results with the relevant host encoding options enabled and disabled rather than assuming one setting is best. Change one option at a time and use the same game and conditions for each check. Steam’s low-framerate and hardware-encoding guidance recommends experimenting with host encoding options.

Check Android and controller compatibility
Steam lists the Android Steam Link app as supporting phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 and newer. Its supported-input list includes the Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 and higher, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile. Steam notes that other inputs may work without being officially supported.
For a controller, confirm the exact model, your Android version, how it connects, and whether it physically fits your phone. A controller appearing on Steam’s list does not guarantee compatibility with every phone or configuration. Consult Steam’s Android Steam Link App information for its supported-input list.
