Sometimes—but “free” usually means no direct charge for a particular way of listening, not unlimited access to every audiobook. Library apps such as Libby let eligible cardholders borrow digital titles without a subscription, but the library controls its catalog, loan periods, and borrowing limits. Commercial plans may include a monthly listening allowance or charge a subscription fee. Ads also depend on the service: Spotify’s US Audiobooks Access page says its music is ad-supported, but does not say that audiobook playback has ads.
What “free” means for an audiobook app
An app can cost nothing to install while access to its audiobooks still depends on a library card, a paid plan, a monthly time allowance, or title availability. To judge the real cost, check what access route applies to you—not just the app’s download price or advertised catalog size.
- Library borrowing: No direct borrowing charge under the documented Libby terms, but a participating library card and available title are required.
- Paid subscription or hour plan: A recurring payment buys access under that plan’s rules; it does not necessarily mean unlimited listening.
- Separate purchase or add-on: Some services offer titles or extra listening access outside an included allowance.
These are different arrangements. “Free,” “included,” and “available in the app” do not mean the same thing.
How free library audiobook apps work
Libby: free borrowing with a participating library card
Libby says its app is free to install and library digital titles are free to borrow with a valid card; its help page says there are no subscription costs, in-app purchases, or late fees for that borrowing. Libby works with public libraries that use OverDrive and offer a digital collection. Libraries choose the titles and lending policies, so not every library or card provides the same catalog. The help page was updated April 13, 2026. Libby’s official explanation of what is free.

Borrowing limits and due dates are set locally
There is no single Libby-wide number of audiobooks you can borrow. Your library chooses how many loans and holds you may have at once. Audiobooks and ebooks count toward the loan limit; magazines and Extras do not, and a library may set additional limits for certain title types. Check the limits shown for your card in Libby and the title’s availability before planning your next listen. Libby’s borrowing-limits guidance.
A borrowed audiobook is a loan, not a permanent copy. Choose from the loan periods offered at checkout; titles return automatically on their due dates, without a late fee under Libby’s stated terms. You may be able to renew a title a few days before it is due, depending on availability and library rules. On mobile, books and audiobooks download automatically over Wi-Fi for offline use. Hoopla’s US listing
The US Apple App Store listing for Hoopla, published by Midwest Tape, LLC, describes free access to books, audiobooks, and other media with a participating library card, with no subscription and no ads. It also advertises offline audiobook downloads. Treat those as claims in that US listing, not a guarantee about every library app, library, or country. Hoopla’s US App Store listing.
When a commercial audiobook plan is “included” rather than free
Spotify’s US pages illustrate why plan details matter. Its 2026 US audiobook page lists Audiobooks Access at $9.99 per month for 15 audiobook listening hours monthly. It also says eligible Premium Individual subscribers and managers of eligible Duo or Family plans receive 15 hours per month as part of their paid plan. That is audiobook access within a paid service, not a free audiobook subscription. Spotify’s US audiobook plan page.

The 15 hours are a monthly allowance: unused included time expires at the end of the month rather than carrying over. The page also describes Audiobooks+ as a paid add-on. Its stated three-month introductory offer for eligible new subscribers ends October 20, 2026, followed by a stated $11.99 monthly price; offers and prices can change, so check the current US terms before subscribing. Playback speed does not make the allowance last longer
Spotify says it deducts time according to a book’s normal playback duration, regardless of the speed you choose. Its example is a five-hour audiobook played at 2× speed: it still uses five hours of allowance. Replaying audio uses listening time again. Spotify’s audiobook allowance guidance.

Do free audiobook apps have ads?
There is no universal answer. Hoopla’s US App Store listing says its service has no ads. Spotify’s US Audiobooks Access page describes the plan’s music listening as part of Spotify’s free, ad-supported service, but it does not establish that audiobook playback itself contains ads. Do not assume an app’s music ad policy applies to audiobooks, or that one service’s no-ads claim applies to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a free app give you access to its whole catalog?
No. With Libby, the participating library selects the digital collection, and a title may be unavailable or subject to a hold. With Spotify, subscriber-catalog titles can change at Spotify’s or third-party rightsholders’ discretion and can vary by country. Spotify’s US page advertises over 700,000 audiobook titles in its subscriber catalog, but that vendor-stated catalog size does not guarantee that every title is available to every listener or plan. Search for the specific audiobook in the relevant catalog before choosing a service. Libby’s catalog and library information; Spotify’s catalog guidance.

What you do—and do not—get to keep
A Libby audiobook is borrowed and becomes unavailable when its loan ends. Spotify subscriber-catalog access is governed by the plan allowance and catalog terms; it should not be treated as a permanent purchase. Spotify identifies separately unlocked titles as distinct from titles in the subscriber catalog. If continuing access matters, check whether the service offers a separate purchase route and what its terms provide. The cited documentation does not establish the licensing contract structures or per-title costs behind library collections, so those economics should not be inferred from a free-to-borrow listing.
Quick Recap
How to choose the right free or low-cost option
- Check your library first. Confirm that it participates in Libby or Hoopla and that your card is accepted for digital borrowing.
- Search for the audiobook you want. A large headline catalog does not ensure that a specific title is available to your library, country, or plan.
- Check local borrowing rules. In Libby, review the loan and hold limits for your card, title availability, and the offered loan period.
- Calculate listening needs against any paid allowance. For Spotify’s documented US plans, compare your monthly listening with the 15-hour limit and account for expiring unused time and replays.
- Separate app access from ownership. Confirm whether you are borrowing, listening under a subscription allowance, using an add-on, or buying a title separately.
- Verify current plan and ad terms. Prices, eligibility, offers, and service features can change; check the service’s current page for your country before paying.
