EPFO member services let you handle many provident-fund tasks yourself, including eligible claims, profile and KYC updates, nominations, and transfer requests. Your employer has a separate administrative role: it manages establishment and employee records, files monthly returns, and may attest to a transfer claim when you select that route. Neither route replaces the other; the right one depends on the task and whether employer-held information or verification is involved.
EPFO member services and employer support: the difference
EPFO provides member-facing interfaces for individual account actions. Employers use separate services to administer their establishment and employee records. The responsibilities below are based on EPFO service descriptions, not an official EPFO ranking or comparison.

What EPFO services can I do myself?
Depending on eligibility and the portal’s current workflow, members can use EPFO services for UAN-related functions, online claims, profile and KYC updates, nominations, and transfer requests. The member portal also lists pension-application tracking and nominee-related claims. A self-service interface means you can initiate or manage the member-side action; it does not guarantee that every step is independent of employer records or verification.

- Use member services for your own account actions, such as eligible claims, e-nomination, and profile or KYC tasks.
- Check the current portal workflow for the specific service; available actions and authentication routes can change.
- Contact your employer when the issue concerns its establishment or employee records, or when the workflow requires employer verification.
Does my employer have to approve my PF transfer?
For the cited online transfer-claim workflow, the member may choose either the previous employer or the present employer for attestation. Employer attestation is therefore part of that route, but the employer is not an all-purpose editor of your EPFO account.
EPFO’s employer guidance says attestation uses a digital signature certificate (DSC). It also limits the employer’s ability to verify or edit details to information entered by the member for the claim; the employer cannot edit details drawn from EPFO’s database in that process. The EPFO guidelines for employers attesting online transfer claims describe these limits.

Can I manage my PF account without HR?
You can handle many member-side tasks through EPFO’s member services without asking HR to perform them for you. But “manage my account” can involve both member-facing actions and employer-maintained records. Employer support may be needed for employer-side information, UAN generation or linking, or a workflow that calls for verification or attestation. For a transfer claim, follow the attestation route shown in the current portal rather than assuming the employer can change any disputed EPFO-populated information.
How do I raise an EPF grievance?
EPFO identifies facilitation centers and grievance channels. Its cited grievance topics include claim settlement, PF transfer, employer non-enrollment, and UAN issuance. EPFO’s Employees’ Information Booklet advises members to raise grievances through EPFiGMS, the Employees Provident Fund Internet Based Grievance Management System.

- First identify whether the problem concerns your member-side claim or account action, or an employer-side record or administrative task.
- For an employer-side record issue, contact the employer so it can check the information it administers.
- For an unresolved EPF service issue, submit a grievance through EPFiGMS and describe the service and problem clearly.
The booklet also urges members changing jobs to transfer their PF accumulations and service rendered into the new pension account. EPFO Member Home may display operational notices about service availability or processing. One notice captured on the portal described member and employer services being brought live in phases after database consolidation and a software upgrade, with potentially longer-than-usual processing during an initial stabilization period. That was a temporary notice, not a general claim-duration estimate. Check the live EPFO Member Home for current availability and notices before acting.
