Choose Nex Playground if your priority is controller-free, camera-based active play together in front of the TV. Choose Nintendo Switch if motion games are one part of a broader console purchase and you want Nintendo Switch Sports’ eight activities alongside other games. The better fit depends on how your family wants to play, the space you have, and whether you want a dedicated active-play system or a general-purpose console.
How the two systems handle motion games
Nex Playground: play in front of a camera
Nex Playground is built around active play. Its wide-angle camera and Nex AI-powered motion engine track players, while the remote is used for setup and navigation rather than as a game controller. That makes it the more direct fit if your goal is to get people moving together without handing each player a controller. These are Nex’s stated features, not a comparative test of tracking accuracy or activity levels. Nex Playground’s product page
Nintendo Switch: motion controls within a general console
Nintendo Switch Sports uses the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers for motion input. It is a game for a broader console, rather than a dedicated camera-based active-play device. Nintendo lists eight activities: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara, or swordplay. The game supports one to four players on one system. Compare the games and local play
| What matters | Nex Playground | Nintendo Switch with Nintendo Switch Sports |
|---|---|---|
| Motion input | Camera and device motion engine; intended for controller-free gameplay. | Joy-Con motion controls. |
| Included activities | Five starter games: Fruit Ninja, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, Party Fowl, Go Keeper, and Starri. | Eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara. |
| Expanded game options | Nex says its optional Play Pass unlocks a catalog of 60-plus active games, including Bluey, Barbie, NFL FLAG, Sesame Street, and PAC-MAN. Catalog size and availability can change. | Nintendo’s listing also points to other motion-related games, including WarioWare: Move It! and Fitness Boxing 3. |
| Local multiplayer | Nex says current multiplayer games do not require multiple controllers. | One to four players on one system in Nintendo Switch Sports. |
| Online play | Nex says downloaded games can be played offline. | Nintendo says online play and save-data cloud features are associated with Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
Pick based on the particular games your family will actually play, not just the size of a catalog. Nex’s included set is a defined starter selection with a paid expansion option; Switch Sports offers a defined set of sports within a console that can also run other games. Neither product information establishes which system keeps families active longer or is easier for every age group.

Check your room before choosing Nex
Nex recommends about 6 by 6 feet of play space, with the device centered in front of or below the TV, a clear view of players, and a recommended device height of 15 to 60 inches. The room needs to accommodate players moving in front of the camera rather than simply a seated player holding a controller. Nex recommends the system for ages five and up; it says three- and four-year-olds may enjoy a wider variety with an adult or older sibling. Nex also notes some games are physically demanding, particularly for children under six. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not an independent developmental or safety assessment. Nintendo Switch Sports supports TV and tabletop play modes. Nintendo cautions that the Switch Lite experience may differ and may require additional accessories, so check compatibility and what your household already owns before choosing a setup. Nintendo Switch Sports’ official listing

Nintendo Switch Sports is listed with the ESRB descriptors “Mild Violence,” “Users Interact,” and “In-Game Purchases.” Nintendo also provides a parental-controls resource. The rating descriptors and the existence of parental controls are useful starting points for a family’s review, but they do not by themselves establish the detailed settings or how they apply to a particular household.
