When a Steam game stutters on Android, first check Steam Remote Play’s performance overlay while the problem happens. Spikes in its cyan network-time line point to variable network timing; if the line stays steady, investigate the game’s frame rate and the host PC’s video encoding. Then change one setting at a time so you can tell what helps.
Use the performance overlay to narrow down the cause
Steam Link for Android streams a game from a PC using Steam Remote Play. Valve lists Android 5.0 and newer as supported and recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for this setup (Steam Remote Play).
- Open Steam Link’s advanced streaming settings and enable the Remote Play performance overlay. Menu wording may vary by app version.
- Reproduce the stutter and watch the overlay as it happens.
- Look for large spikes in the cyan network-time line. Valve says these indicate highly variable network time and usually coincide with video stuttering or freezing (Steam Remote Play: Suggested Settings).
A spike makes the network path a strong place to start. A steady line does not prove that the network is perfect, but it makes host game performance or encoding worth checking next.
If network time spikes, improve the connection first
Wire the host PC and strengthen the Android Wi-Fi connection
- Connect the host PC to the router with Ethernet if practical. This removes the PC’s wireless hop from the streaming path.
- Connect the Android device to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Valve recommends 5 GHz and notes that distance, walls, and interference can affect signal quality.
- Move the router and Android device to improve signal strength, and reduce competing wireless activity such as large downloads or another video stream.
Lower stream quality or limit bandwidth
In Steam Link’s streaming settings, try Balanced or Fast quality, or set a bandwidth limit. Valve’s suggested-settings guidance describes starting at 3 Mbit/s and increasing gradually until hitches appear, then stepping back. That is a tuning method—not a universal bandwidth requirement—and the best setting depends on the game, stream resolution, and network.

Change one setting at a time and repeat the same gameplay section. If lowering quality or bandwidth stops the hitch, the stream was likely exceeding what the connection could deliver consistently.
If the network looks stable, check game performance and encoding on the PC
Reduce resolution and compare
Valve’s low-streaming-framerate guidance identifies slow game frame rate and slow host encoding as possible causes. First lower the stream resolution; Valve gives 1280×720 as an example. If that does not help, lower the game’s own display resolution and retest (Steam Remote Play: Low Streaming Framerate).

Test host encoding settings and close other software
Try changing the host’s hardware-encoding setting in Steam Remote Play and compare results. Encoding behavior can vary by GPU, so there is no single setting that is best for every PC. Also close heavy background tasks and utilities that might conflict with streaming, then test again.

Check network configuration only for connection problems
For a streaming connection to work, the host and Android client need to be reachable on the local network. Valve warns that access point or client isolation can prevent devices from communicating. Its Remote Play guidance lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, and TCP ports 27036 and 27037 (Steam Remote Play: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity). These are connection-troubleshooting details, not a reason to add arbitrary port forwarding when the issue is intermittent stutter on a working local connection.

When a router upgrade may be worth considering
Consider a router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 802.11ac support only if the overlay and connection checks point to wireless variability and the free changes do not resolve it. Valve identifies 802.11ac as a strong wireless option, but a new router is not a guaranteed fix: results still depend on the Android device, host connection, placement, and surrounding wireless interference (Steam Remote Play: Suggested Settings).
