To connect a Wi-Fi router to fiber, run an Ethernet cable from the fiber ONT’s Ethernet/LAN port to the router’s WAN/Internet port, then enter the WAN settings your ISP requires. A standard Wi-Fi router does not connect directly to the optical fiber. The exact settings—and whether you can replace your ISP’s gateway—depend on your provider and service.
Check which fiber equipment you have
Before changing cables, identify the device where the fiber service enters your home. Your setup will usually include one of these:
- A standalone ONT: The optical network terminal converts the fiber connection into Ethernet. If it has an active Ethernet handoff, connect that port to your router’s WAN/Internet port.
- An ISP gateway or router: This combines routing and Wi-Fi functions. You may be able to replace it, or keep it and connect your own router behind it.
- A combined or provider-specific device: Follow the ISP’s instructions for that equipment. For example, Brightspeed says its fiber customers still need the provider’s ONT when using their own router (Brightspeed’s own-router guidance).
Do not confuse fiber-to-the-home (FTTP/FTTH) with fiber-to-the-cabinet service that uses a DSL connection for the final link. The equipment and configuration can differ; TP-Link’s BT instructions distinguish between those cases (TP-Link’s BT setup guide).
Choose whether to replace the ISP router or add yours behind it
These are different network arrangements. Check with your ISP before disconnecting its equipment: some services require particular hardware, credentials, or configuration.

| Setup | What connects to what | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Replace the ISP Wi-Fi router | ONT Ethernet port to your router’s WAN/Internet port | Use this only if the ISP permits it and you have the required WAN settings. For BT FTTP/FTTH, TP-Link describes connecting to the Openreach ONT and using PPPoE, with credentials and any required VLAN ID obtained from BT (TP-Link’s BT setup guide). |
| Keep the ISP gateway and add your router in router mode | Gateway LAN port to your router’s WAN/Internet port | The two routers may both perform network address translation, creating double NAT. TP-Link’s BT example uses Dynamic IP from the hub and warns, “You will have double NAT in the network this way.” (TP-Link’s BT setup guide) |
| Keep the gateway and use your router in access point (AP) mode | Connect the devices as specified by their manufacturers, then enable AP mode | AP mode can avoid double NAT in the illustrated setup, but some advanced router features may be unavailable. The mode and its effects depend on the equipment (TP-Link’s BT setup guide). |
Get the required WAN settings from your ISP
Ask your ISP for the connection type and any values required for your specific line. Do not assume that another provider’s settings—or settings used in a different country—will work. TP-Link lists Dynamic IP/IPoE, PPPoE, and Static IP as possible WAN types; VLAN tagging is needed only when the ISP requires it (TP-Link’s guide to internet connection types).
- Dynamic IP/IPoE: The router typically obtains its WAN address automatically. Use this if the ISP specifies it.
- PPPoE: Enter the username and password supplied by the ISP.
- Static IP: Enter the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS values supplied by the ISP.
- VLAN ID: Enter the provider’s VLAN ID only if the ISP says tagging is required. Ask whether the router needs any additional VLAN settings.
If you do not know these values, contact the ISP and ask for the exact WAN connection type, credentials or static IP details, and VLAN requirement for your line.

Connect and configure the router
- Connect the Ethernet handoff. With a standalone ONT, connect its Ethernet/LAN port to your router’s WAN/Internet port. ASUS illustrates this port pairing as ONT LAN1 to router WAN in its Singtel-specific instructions (ASUS’s Singtel ONT setup guide).
- Power on and open the setup wizard. Use the router’s app or web interface and follow the manufacturer’s directions for your model. Power-up order and any waiting period are not universal; ASUS’s cited sequence is specific to Singtel equipment, so do not treat it as a general requirement.
- Configure the Internet or WAN connection. Select the connection type provided by the ISP, then enter the applicable credentials, static IP values, or VLAN ID. Leave settings unset rather than guessing when the ISP has not specified them.
- Set Wi-Fi details. Choose a network name (SSID) and Wi-Fi password. Select a current security option supported by your router and devices, following the manufacturer’s setup guide.
- Set a separate router administrator password. This is used to manage router settings; it is not the Wi-Fi password. ASUS’s guided setup treats Wi-Fi credentials and router login as separate steps (ASUS’s Singtel ONT setup guide).
- Save the configuration and reconnect your devices. Use the router app or interface’s prompts to apply changes, then join the new Wi-Fi network on your phone or computer.
Test the connection
First, connect a computer to the router with Ethernet if possible and check that websites load. Then test over Wi-Fi in the rooms where you use the network. A working wired connection but weak Wi-Fi points to a wireless coverage or placement issue rather than a fiber handoff problem.
Troubleshoot when there is no internet
- Check the physical link: Confirm the ONT’s Ethernet cable is in the router’s WAN/Internet port—not a LAN port—and that both ends are seated securely.
- Confirm the equipment path: Make sure the cable is connected to the correct ONT or gateway port and that the ISP’s service is active.
- Recheck WAN configuration: Verify the selected connection type and any PPPoE credentials, static IP details, or VLAN ID against information from the ISP.
- Ask the ISP to verify the line: If the connection still fails, ask support to confirm activation and provide the exact settings required for your ONT and service. The correct configuration cannot be determined without those provider-specific details.
Choose a router that fits the service
There is no universal “fiber router” setting or model: compatibility depends on the ISP’s WAN requirements and the equipment arrangement. Before buying, compare the router’s supported WAN methods and configuration modes with what your provider requires, and check that its WAN and LAN port speeds suit your subscribed plan. Also consider the wireless generation and coverage you need at home.

- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Brightspeed suggests Wi-Fi 5 as a minimum and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E as preferable in its own guidance; that is a provider recommendation, not a universal requirement (Brightspeed’s own-router guidance). A basic Ethernet cable may be needed for the ONT-to-router link; choose one suitable for the ports, cable run, and equipment rather than assuming a category without checking.
