Brushed cordless tools use carbon brushes and a commutator to switch motor current mechanically; brushless tools use electronic controls to switch current through stationary windings. Brushless designs remove brush wear and can use battery power more efficiently, but they usually cost more, and neither runtime nor torque is guaranteed by the motor label alone. Which is better depends on the tool, task, use frequency, battery platform, and price.
What’s the difference between brushed and brushless tools?
The distinction is how the motor switches electrical current. A brushed motor uses physical contact between carbon brushes and a commutator. A brushless motor has no brushes or commutator; an electronic controller switches current through the motor’s stationary windings.
How a brushed motor works
Springs press carbon brushes against segmented contacts on the rotating armature. As the armature turns, the commutator changes the current through its coils, sustaining the magnetic forces that turn the shaft. The sliding contact creates friction and heat, and brushes and commutator can wear over time. DEWALT explains this conventional arrangement in its brushed-versus-brushless motor guide.
How a brushless motor works
In a brushless motor, permanent magnets are on the rotor and the wound coils are on the stationary stator. An electronic controller switches current through the coils in sequence to keep the rotor turning. Sensors or controller algorithms can guide that switching. The consumer-level difference is electronic commutation instead of brush-and-commutator contact. Nidec and Renesas describe these motor arrangements in their motor overview and brushless cordless drill material.

What changes in everyday use?

These are design tendencies, not a promise that every brushless model beats every brushed one. The motor, drivetrain, battery, and tool design work together. Festool’s manufacturer interview makes the point plainly: Martin Graf, Head of Module Development at Festool, says, “The best motor is no use without a suitable battery.”
Does a brushless drill run longer on one battery?
It can, because eliminating brush friction and using electronic control can improve efficiency. But runtime is a system outcome: battery capacity and condition, motor and drivetrain design, tool settings, material, accessory, and workload all affect how long a charge lasts. The sources do not establish a universal runtime percentage or a model-matched figure that applies across cordless tools.

For a useful comparison, look for the same tool class doing the same task with equivalent batteries and settings. Compare battery capacity as well as platform, and do not treat a manufacturer’s broad motor-type comparison as a controlled drill-runtime test.
Do brushless tools have more torque or last longer?
Torque and power
A brushless design can support higher output and more flexible electronic control, but “brushless” by itself does not tell you the torque delivered at the bit or blade. Gearing, cooling, battery output, control settings, and tool class matter. Compare the specifications and capabilities of the exact tools for the work you plan to do.

Tool life and service
Brushless motors avoid brush replacement, so they remove one motor wear item. That does not make the whole tool maintenance-free or establish that it will last longer overall: bearings, switches, electronics, batteries, and drivetrain parts can still need service. Brushed designs may be simpler to repair, while brushless repairs involving control electronics can be more complex. Lowe’s also notes that brushless electronics may be more vulnerable in harsh operating conditions; check the exact model’s environmental ratings and care instructions rather than assuming a broad durability advantage.
Is a brushless drill worth the extra money?
For frequent work, demanding tasks, or jobs where charging interruptions and brush replacement matter, paying more for a brushless model may make sense. If you use a tool occasionally for light DIY work and purchase price is the priority, a brushed model can be a sensible choice. These are decision tendencies: the right answer depends on the actual price difference, tool capability, and expected use.

Before choosing a cordless drill/driver or another tool, compare the complete options rather than just the motor type:
- Tool class and suitability for your materials and workload.
- Battery platform, capacity, and output; check whether the listing is tool-only or includes batteries and a charger.
- Speed and torque settings, ergonomics, and control features.
- Warranty, local repair support, and availability of approved service parts.
- Total kit cost against how often you expect to use the tool.
Festool drivetrain developer Fabian Grass describes the user-centered goal this way: “A motor is good if the user perceives it in a positive way.” That is a useful lens for comparing complete tools, not just motor labels.

Are brushed power tools still worth buying?
Yes, when a brushed tool meets the job at a price that suits your use. Brush wear is a real maintenance consideration, but it does not automatically make a brushed tool a poor purchase. If replacement brushes are needed, use the part specified for the exact tool model; compatibility cannot be inferred from motor type alone.
