To help a cordless tool battery last, store it cool and dry, use the charger specified for its battery platform, and follow that manufacturer’s instructions for charging and long-term storage. Those instructions differ by brand, so there is no single charge percentage or storage routine that applies to every pack.
Store batteries somewhere cool and dry
Heat, moisture, and poor storage conditions can damage a pack. Keep batteries away from liquids and sustained heat, and avoid leaving them in places that get very hot, such as a vehicle in the sun. Milwaukee’s lithium-ion battery manual warns that long-term storage above 120°F (50°C) can cause permanent capacity loss. That temperature is a specific warning in Milwaukee’s manual, not a universal safe-storage threshold for every brand.
DEWALT advises: “Store and charge batteries in a cool, dry location.” Milwaukee likewise says to “Store battery packs at room temperature away from moisture.” Follow the guidance for your own battery rather than treating either brand’s wording as a universal specification.
Use the right charger and follow the pack’s instructions
Use a charger made for your battery platform. Do not assume that a charger from another brand is compatible, even if the battery appears to fit. Milwaukee directs users to charge its lithium-ion packs only in a Milwaukee lithium-ion charger. Makita describes its compatible Rapid Optimum Charger communicating with the BL1850B battery to monitor current, voltage, and temperature. That product-specific feature is not proof that a new charger will extend the life of every battery.

Charging, maintenance, and storage procedures vary among manufacturers and models. Check the battery manual or the manufacturer’s support page for instructions on charging before storage, whether to remove the pack from the tool, and what to do after prolonged storage. Do not apply one brand’s routine to another.
Prepare a battery for long-term storage
For storage lasting months, check the manual for your exact battery before putting it away. The instructions are not interchangeable:

- DEWALT: For storage longer than six months, DEWALT advises fully charging the battery before storage. Its safety guidance also says to remove a battery from the tool for extended storage.
- Milwaukee: Its battery manual says to recharge packs after about a year of storage. Milwaukee’s FAQ recommends unplugging chargers and removing batteries when they are not in use; its explanation that its own electronics protect against overcharging should not be assumed to apply to other brands.
These are manufacturer-specific directions, not a universal schedule. If your manual gives a different interval or charge instruction, use that instead.
Keep packs clean, dry, and physically safe
Keep battery terminals away from metal objects and other conductive materials that could create a short circuit. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions: DEWALT recommends a slightly damp cloth and cautions against solvents, while Milwaukee’s manual warns against water and solvents. Keep the pack dry, and never immerse it or expose it to liquids.

Do not use, open, or attempt to repair a battery with visible cracks or other damage. DEWALT says not to use cracked batteries and not to attempt repair or service; Milwaukee also warns against disassembling damaged packs. Contact the manufacturer or an appropriate service location for next steps. For transport or disposal, consult the manufacturer and local battery-recycling guidance.
Replace a worn pack with a compatible one
If a battery no longer serves your needs, choose a genuine replacement made for your tool platform. Check the brand, platform, voltage, and model compatibility before buying; similar-looking packs are not necessarily interchangeable. DEWALT recommends authentic batteries for compatibility and safety. Makita’s BL1850B, for example, is an 18V LXT pack, not a general-purpose replacement for other platforms.

Choose a compatible charger only if you need one because yours is missing, damaged, or unsuitable. A replacement charger is not required simply to improve routine battery care.

The manufacturer guidance cited here offers practical storage and charging precautions, but it does not establish a universal number of years or charge cycles that these steps add. Battery life depends on the particular pack and its use; no specific lifespan increase or percentage improvement can be promised from these instructions.
