A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If a cordless tool battery won’t charge, first check the outlet, make sure the charger is compatible and the pack is seated correctly, then let a pack that is too hot or cold return to its permitted charging range. These checks can identify common problems without opening the battery. Charger lights, temperature limits, and compatibility differ by model, so use the manual for your exact battery and charger.
Why won’t my cordless tool battery charge?
A battery that appears not to charge may be affected by the power outlet, an incompatible charger, poor seating or contact, or a temperature lockout. The symptoms alone do not prove that the pack has failed. Work through these checks in order, stopping if you see damage or another safety concern.
1. Check the outlet
Plug a lamp or another appliance into the same outlet to confirm it has power. Also check whether a wall switch controls the outlet. DEWALT lists these as checks when a battery pack does not charge properly in its operator manual.
2. Confirm the battery and charger are compatible
Use a charger specified for the battery platform and confirm the pairing in both product manuals. Milwaukee identifies an incorrect battery type as one possible cause of charger behavior in its charger troubleshooting guide. Do not try a charger simply because the pack fits, and do not bypass the battery’s electronics.

After installation, gently pull the battery to verify it is locked. Clean the contacts regularly and use compatible batteries to ensure proper operation.
3. Remove and reseat the pack
Remove the battery and fit it fully into the charger, following the manual’s instructions. A pack that is not making a proper connection may not begin charging. Milwaukee recommends removing and reinserting the pack for certain indicator problems in its troubleshooting guide.
4. Let the battery return to its charging temperature range
A pack that is too hot or too cold may pause charging until its temperature returns to the range accepted by that model. Milwaukee describes a flashing red indicator as a temperature condition in its operator manual; normal charging begins after the pack returns to the acceptable range.

Temperature limits are not universal. One DEWALT manual recommends an ambient charging range of 65–75°F (18–24°C) for best life and performance, and says not to charge below 40°F (4.5°C) or above 105°F (40.5°C). Those figures apply to that manual’s product family, not every cordless tool battery; check your own manual for its limits.
5. Inspect the contacts and charger cavity
With the charger disconnected from power, inspect the battery terminals and charger cavity for visible debris. Keep metal chips, grinding dust, and other conductive material out of charger cavities; DEWALT warns that such debris can create a hazard in its operator manual. Follow your product’s instructions for cleaning. Do not use liquids or solvents unless the manufacturer specifically directs you to, and do not disassemble the pack.

Why is my battery charger flashing?
A flashing light is a model-specific status signal, not a universal fault code. Depending on the charger, it may indicate that the pack is too hot or cold, is not seated or connected properly, or has another condition requiring attention. Read the indicator legend in the charger manual for your exact model before deciding what the pattern means. For example, Milwaukee describes a flashing red indicator as an out-of-range battery temperature in one operator manual; that interpretation should not be applied to other chargers.
Can a cold battery stop charging?
Yes. A battery outside its model’s permitted charging range may not charge until it warms or cools back into that range. Bring it to a suitable indoor environment and let it return to the range specified in its manual; do not use an external heat source to force the process. If the charger continues to indicate a temperature problem after the pack has had time to stabilize, consult the manual’s troubleshooting guidance.

How do I know if the battery or charger is bad?
After checking the outlet, compatibility, seating, temperature, and visible debris, a comparison with a known-good charger that is compatible with the same battery platform can help identify whether the charger may be at fault. Milwaukee recommends this kind of check when a pack may be faulty in its troubleshooting guide. Use only a known-good, compatible charger; an incompatible charger is not a safe diagnostic substitute.
If the problem persists, or you cannot determine the cause from the status indicators and manual, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center. DEWALT advises taking the tool, battery pack, and charger to a service center when charging problems persist in its operator manual. Check warranty coverage for your specific product and region before buying a replacement.
