To find out whether your PC can run a game, compare your computer with the game’s official requirements one item at a time: operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card and required features, DirectX, and available storage. A match is a useful compatibility check, not a promise of smooth performance; the game’s stated resolution, frame rate, and graphics preset explain what its minimum and recommended specs are intended to deliver.
Start with the game’s official requirements
Open the publisher’s page or the game’s listing on its storefront and find the PC system requirements. Use the listing for the exact game and, where relevant, its current version: requirements can differ between games and may be revised. Steam game pages publish requirements, and Epic Games Support has a PC verification guide. Epic Games’ verification guide and the game’s own listing are better starting points than an old article or a third-party checker used on its own.
Copy both the minimum and recommended specifications into a checklist. Keep qualifiers such as 64-bit, VRAM, graphics features, storage type, and the intended performance target attached to the relevant requirement.
Compare every requirement, not just the graphics card
For each row, mark your PC as Meets, Falls short, or Unclear. A single shortfall can matter, and an unclear comparison is not the same as a confirmed match.

Check exact CPU and GPU models
Requirements may list models from different manufacturers separated by “or.” Compare your actual model with the alternatives; a matching brand or product-family name is not enough. If you do not know how two processors or graphics cards compare, look for reliable comparisons of those exact models rather than inferring performance from one specification, such as clock speed. There is no universal conversion rule that can establish equivalence from a single number.
Check graphics features as well as DirectX
A graphics card can meet a minimum DirectX version while lacking a required pixel shader capability, according to Steam Support’s graphics troubleshooting guidance. So treat the DirectX line as one check, not a complete verdict on graphics compatibility.

Check free space and drive notes
Make sure the required space is free on a drive suitable for the game. If the listing says an SSD is preferred but an HDD is supported, preserve that distinction: a preference is not the same as a stated minimum requirement.
Understand what minimum and recommended mean
Minimum and recommended specifications are separate targets. Read any resolution, frame-rate, and quality-preset notes alongside the hardware list; do not assume that a game uses the same definitions as another title.

For example, the Hogwarts Legacy Steam listing describes its minimum target as 720p at 30 fps on Low settings. Its recommended target is 1080p at 60 fps on High settings. Those targets apply to that game’s listing, not to PC requirements generally.

The listing says an SSD is preferred and an HDD is supported for its minimum specification. Requirements and accompanying notes can change, so check the current listing before relying on this example.
Requirements can also include game-specific conditions beyond the usual hardware rows. A Square Enix support article, for a different PC game, gives minimum and recommended targets of 60 fps at 1280×720 on Low and 60 fps at 1920×1080 on Highest, respectively, and includes an additional memory note for Intel GPU use. Those conditions belong to that game, not to a universal definition of “minimum” or “recommended.”

What a match does—and does not—tell you
If every requirement matches, you have evidence that your PC meets the listing; you do not have a guarantee of flawless play. The result depends on the exact hardware and the target settings, and a requirement list cannot establish how every configuration will perform. Steam notes that RAM availability affects model loading and graphics rendering. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends lowering graphics settings when addressing problems on systems with integrated graphics. Steam Support
If your PC only meets minimum requirements, Epic Games’ indexed support guidance says the game will probably not run at the highest settings. Treat that as a reason to compare the game’s stated minimum target with your expectations—not as a guarantee of a specific frame rate or visual quality.
What to do when a comparison is unclear
- Unfamiliar CPU or GPU: Find a reliable model-specific comparison for the exact processor or graphics card. Do not guess from a brand name, clock speed, or DirectX version.
- Missing performance target: Check the game’s official support information or reliable benchmarks for the exact CPU and GPU pair. If you cannot confirm the expected result, keep the target marked unclear.
- Possible graphics-feature mismatch: Check the game’s feature notes and your GPU’s capabilities; a DirectX match alone does not settle shader compatibility.
- Storage shortfall: Check free space on the intended drive, along with any listed drive-type preference or support note.
- Considering an upgrade: Identify the specific requirement you fall short of first, then confirm that the replacement component is compatible with and upgradeable in your PC. A parts list alone cannot identify a universal best upgrade.
For a definitive run-or-no-run assessment, you need both the exact game and your PC’s specifications. To find hardware details, consult current Windows help or your computer manufacturer’s support documentation; the steps can vary by device.
