For a removable cordless-tool battery, disconnect it from the tool and charger, keep it clean and dry, protect it from direct sunlight and heat, and store it securely out of children’s reach. The right storage charge and temperature depend on the battery maker and model: follow the pack’s manual rather than applying one brand’s advice to every battery. Do not use a visibly damaged pack or try to repair it.
Prepare the battery before storing it
- Disconnect it. Remove the pack from the tool and charger when storing it. Hilti’s NBL 6-22 instructions say to store that product with its battery removed, and DEWALT recommends disengaging packs from tools for extended storage. If your tool has an integrated battery, use its manual instead of trying to remove it.
- Check and clean it. Inspect the casing for cracks or other visible damage. Keep the battery clean and dry; follow the maker’s cleaning instructions and do not attempt repairs.
- Choose a secure place. Store the pack away from children and unauthorized users, direct sunlight, and heat sources. A dry basement, garage, or insulated shed may be suitable only if it stays within the temperature limits for that battery.
STIHL UK lists a closed box as one example of a dry, sheltered storage location. A generic storage box can help keep dust off and packs organized, but it is not necessarily fireproof or approved for charging, and it does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions.
Use the storage charge specified for your pack
There is no single storage percentage supported across these brands. STIHL’s international support article, modified April 15, 2024, recommends storing its batteries at 40–60% charge and says a regularly used STIHL battery does not need recharging during storage. STIHL’s US guide describes 40–80% as a general range. DEWALT, by contrast, says to fully charge its batteries before storage lasting longer than six months. These are brand-specific instructions, not interchangeable rules.
Check the manual for your exact battery to find its recommended charge level and whether it needs checking or recharging during extended storage. Do not assume that a percentage or interval recommended for another brand applies to your pack.

Keep storage and charging temperatures within the manual’s limits
Store batteries in a cool, dry location, away from direct sun and heat. Temperature limits vary by product. STIHL’s 2024 international storage guidance gives −10°C to 50°C as a possible range for its batteries, while directing users to the manual for exact limits. That range is not a universal specification. Hilti likewise directs users to the technical data for applicable limits.
Storage temperature and charging temperature are separate considerations. STIHL Canada says its batteries must be above 5°C to charge; that threshold applies to STIHL batteries covered by its guidance, not to all cordless-tool packs. After storing a battery in cold or hot conditions, consult its manual before charging or using it.

Inspect the battery before putting it back to work
Before use, look for visible damage such as cracks and check that the pack is clean and dry. DEWALT specifically warns, “Do not use batteries with visible damage or cracks,” and says not to attempt repair. Hilti recommends checking its products before use and after prolonged storage. If a pack is damaged, follow the manufacturer’s service process; DEWALT directs customers to a service center for disposal. Do not put a damaged pack back into service or try to fix it yourself.

- Whether the battery should be removed from the tool and charger.
