How much storage does Nintendo Switch 2 have?
The console has 256 GB of internal storage. Nintendo reserves some space for system use, so the full 256 GB is not available for game installs. Nintendo’s published information does not specify the exact user-available capacity.
Extra storage is optional for playing games according to Nintendo Support’s current Data Management FAQ. It is useful if you want to keep a larger digital library or many screenshots and video captures on the console.
How much space do Switch 2 games need?
There is no reliable single “average” size established by these examples: game requirements vary by title, edition, and listing. Nintendo directs players to check the packaging or the Nintendo eShop listing for the specific requirement. Here are three official listing examples:

The figures are tied to those regional listings, not a universal guaranteed install size. Listings may vary in rounding, timing, or edition details, and updates or DLC can add data. Which microSD cards work with Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB. A regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card that worked with the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games. The console does not include a microSD Express card; it is sold separately. If you decide to expand, choose a card explicitly identified as microSD Express and check its capacity against your needs. Once inserted, it becomes the default location for downloaded software, and you can transfer downloadable software between the card and system memory.
What can the card store—and what happens to saves?
A microSD Express card can hold downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured videos. Game save data is kept in system memory instead, including when you play a game from a game card or microSD Express card. Nintendo says deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data.

Existing standard microSD cards from the original Switch cannot load or save Switch 2 games. Nintendo does provide a way to import screenshots and videos from those cards to Switch 2 system memory; consult the microSD Express FAQ for the supported process.
Does a physical Switch 2 game avoid a large download?
Not necessarily. A Game-Key Card acts as a key to download the full game data; the game itself is not fully contained on that card. Check the packaging or product listing to understand what a physical edition includes rather than assuming it avoids a substantial download. Should you buy one microSD Express card?
Base the decision on how many games and captures you want kept on the console at once. Nintendo recommends using one card: software stored across multiple cards cannot simply be combined by inserting them together. For an upgrade, Nintendo documents copying data to a larger card. Check Nintendo’s data-management FAQ for the current transfer instructions.
