Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger is designed to coordinate payment workflows involving bank-issued tokenized deposits—not to replace Swift messaging, bank money, or the settlement arrangements banks already use. Swift says its MVP uses an EVM-compatible architecture based on Hyperledger Besu. Connecting a bank may also require permissioned blockchain infrastructure, tokenization and custody tools, and governance for keys and assets. Taurus says it has integrated its products with Swift’s infrastructure, but its implementation paths are vendor offerings, not universal requirements.

What Swift’s shared ledger is designed to do

Swift describes the ledger as an additional layer in its infrastructure stack. Its initial use case is real-time, 24/7 cross-border payments using bank-issued tokenized deposits. The ledger is intended to record, sequence, and validate transactions, enforce rules through smart contracts, and coordinate the steps institutions take to process a payment. Swift presents interoperability with existing and emerging systems as a design goal. These are descriptions of the project’s intended design, not independent measurements of performance. Swift’s project overview

The distinction between coordination and settlement matters. Swift says it will operate the ledger and orchestrate workflows, validate funding commitments, and coordinate interbank processes. Participating banks retain authority over their keys, assets, funding, and settlement. Settlement may continue through RTGS systems, correspondent banking relationships, or another mechanism agreed by participants. The ledger therefore does not, by itself, move commercial-bank money or replace those arrangements. Swift’s MVP announcement

What technology is behind the MVP?

Swift says the MVP is built on open-source foundations and uses an EVM-compatible architecture based on Hyperledger Besu. EVM compatibility allows software designed for the Ethereum Virtual Machine environment to run in a compatible setting; the announcement does not mean the ledger is a public Ethereum network. Swift says it will operate the ledger, while participating institutions remain responsible for their own authority over keys, assets, funding, and settlement. Swift’s MVP announcement

In its project overview, Swift describes a secure, real-time log and smart-contract rules as parts of the planned system. Those descriptions explain the intended function; they are not independently verified service-level or transaction-performance results. Swift’s project overview

What infrastructure layers might a bank need?

A bank’s implementation needs depend on what infrastructure it already operates and how it wants to manage keys, custody, and tokenization. Taurus describes several products and connection paths for institutions considering its services; these are Taurus’s options, not a checklist Swift has imposed on every participant. Permissioned Besu or EVM connectivity

An institution needs a way to connect its environment to the ledger’s EVM-compatible infrastructure. Taurus offers managed permissioned Hyperledger Besu infrastructure and EVM connectivity for institutions that do not operate their own, and says it can also connect to an institution’s existing Besu or EVM-compatible environment. The choice turns on the bank’s existing capability and whether it wants a managed service. Taurus’s Swift ledger page

Key management and custody

Taurus-PROTECT is Taurus’s programmable-wallet and key-management product. Taurus says an existing Taurus-PROTECT client can extend its instance for this use. Regardless of vendor, the institution needs to determine how key control, access, and operational responsibilities fit its own governance and the ledger workflow; Swift says banks retain authority over their keys and assets. Tokenization and smart-contract integration

Taurus-CAPITAL is Taurus’s enterprise tokenization product. Taurus says it integrated Swift smart contracts with Taurus-CAPITAL tokenization and Taurus-PROTECT custody on clients’ permissioned blockchain infrastructure. That is Taurus’s description of its integration, not evidence that every bank needs those particular products. Taurus’s announcement

Funding, settlement, and institutional governance

Software connectivity does not decide how a bank funds a payment, who approves asset movements, or how final settlement occurs. Swift’s description leaves those authorities with participating institutions and points to RTGS systems, correspondent banking, or other participant-agreed mechanisms for settlement. Banks therefore need internal arrangements for those responsibilities alongside any technical integration. Swift’s MVP announcement

How Taurus describes the connection options

Taurus’s page presents two broad infrastructure situations: use its managed Besu/EVM connectivity, or connect Taurus products to infrastructure the institution already operates. Existing Taurus-PROTECT clients may extend their instance. Taurus also states that Swift community membership is required to connect. Institutions should confirm eligibility and setup details with the providers, since access and implementation arrangements can change. Taurus’s Swift ledger page

Taurus co-founder and managing partner Lamine Brahimi said, “Financial institutions need digital asset infrastructure that can connect securely with the systems and networks they already use.” The statement captures Taurus’s rationale for offering both managed and existing-infrastructure paths; it is the company’s view, not an independent assessment. What the readiness claims do—and do not—establish

In an announcement dated 26 August 2026, Taurus described its integration as production-ready and said first live clients were expected shortly. That is a dated vendor readiness statement. It does not establish broad live deployment, transaction volume, independently measured performance, or universal access. Taurus’s announcement

Swift Chief Business Officer Thierry Chilosi characterized the project as extending established finance into digital money and said it could support cross-border movement of tokenized value and future innovation. Those are Swift’s claims about the project’s aims, not independently verified outcomes. Swift’s project overview
