The watch triggers the sync; the earbuds do not independently detect sleep. Google announced the feature on August 12, 2026, with software updates due to begin rolling out in September.
What Pixel Buds sleep sync does
When the Pixel Watch detects sleep, it signals the earbuds to enter bedtime mode. Google says the mode can pause currently playing media, disable touch controls and “Hey Google” hotword detection, and suppress earbud sounds such as low-battery chimes. The feature requires a Google Pixel Watch that supports auto-bedtime mode, according to Google’s Pixel Buds Help page.
Google’s August 12, 2026 Pixel Buds product update described the feature this way: “Your watch detects when you fall asleep and pauses music, disables touch, and silences notifications, so you can rest undisturbed.” The documented actions apply to the earbuds; the sync is not described as a general phone-notification silencer.
What stays active, and how to exit bedtime mode
Bedtime mode does not turn off everything on the earbuds. Emergency ringtones, Find My Device, and active noise cancellation remain available. The earbuds normally leave bedtime mode when the watch’s bedtime mode ends. To exit sooner, put the earbuds in their case or answer a phone call.

- Multipoint audio: Media playing from a secondary device over multipoint may not pause automatically; pause it manually if needed.
Sleep sync is different from in-ear detection
These features have different triggers and purposes. Sleep sync responds to sleep sensing by a compatible Pixel Watch; in-ear detection responds to removing or reinserting an earbud. Google documents in-ear detection as pausing audio when a bud is removed and resuming it when reinserted.

Google’s sleep-sync help page does not name eligible watch generations or regions, so check the watch’s auto-bedtime support rather than assuming a particular Pixel Watch model will work. For in-ear detection settings and manual controls, see Google’s in-ear detection instructions. Google says that if in-ear detection is off, triple-tap the right earbud to manually sleep or wake it.

Availability and what Google has established
Google announced Pixel Watch sleep sync for Pixel Buds on August 12, 2026, and said software updates would begin rolling out in September. Google’s product information names Pixel Buds Pro 2 in connection with the feature, but the cited help documentation does not specify eligible watch models or regional availability. Confirm support for the exact watch and earbuds rather than inferring compatibility from the feature announcement.
Google’s published material describes the control behavior, not a measured sleep or health outcome. It does not establish that sleep sync improves sleep quality or quantify any benefit.
