Use parental controls as one layer of a safety plan: set age-appropriate device limits, tighten privacy and contact settings in each social app, and agree with your child on what to do if something feels wrong. No single setting covers every device or guarantees a child’s safety.
Which controls should you use?
Start with the devices and accounts your child actually uses. Device-level controls can manage schedules, app access, and time; settings inside each social platform address matters such as who can contact the account, what content appears, and whether location is shared. They do different jobs, so using one does not replace the other.
| Control layer | Useful for | Limits to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Device or operating system | Schedules, daily or app-specific time limits, app downloads and permissions | Coverage depends on the device, account, and supported features. Google Family Link cannot supervise iPhones, iPads, or computers other than Chromebooks. Google’s Family Link help describes supported controls and devices. |
| Social platform | Account privacy, contacts and messages, content settings, location, reporting, and platform-specific supervision | Usually applies only within that platform. Features and availability can vary by account, region, language, and rollout. |
| Family agreement | Shared expectations for sleep, school, contacts, location sharing, and asking for help | Requires ongoing conversation; controls alone do not establish trust or guarantee safety. |
Set up controls with your child
- List devices and accounts. Ask which phones, tablets, computers, browsers, and social accounts your child uses, including secondary devices. A limit on one device will not necessarily apply to another.
- Agree on priorities. Discuss sleep and school schedules, who may contact your child, whether location is shared, preferred account privacy, content boundaries, and what to do if an interaction feels wrong. Apple’s family guide recommends discussing expectations, schedules, communications, and continuing the conversation. Apple and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guide is a useful starting point.
- Configure device-level controls. Where available, consider app-installation approval, downtime or bedtime schedules, daily limits, and per-app time limits. Review which devices and accounts those controls cover.
- Configure each social app separately. Check privacy, contact and messaging limits, content settings, location, reporting tools, and any parent-supervision option. Do not assume that a device time limit changes who can message the account or what content it can show.
- Test the settings together. Confirm what the child sees, what the parent can see or change, and how to get help or report an account. Make sure you know how to update the settings. Google advises checking settings after a child changes account-control options.
- Revisit the plan. Review it when your child matures, their needs change, they start using a new device or app, or a platform changes its controls.
What the built-in controls can do
Apple Screen Time and family settings
Apple’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes Screen Time features for child accounts, including app and website safety settings, schedules and time allowances, and communication controls. Apple says Communication Safety is on by default for users under 18. The announcement names iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27; some features may not be available in every region, language, or model. Check the software version and the options actually available on your family’s devices before relying on a particular control. Apple’s announcement and family guide provide details.
Google Family Link and YouTube
For supported supervised devices, Google Family Link can manage app downloads and permissions, block or allow apps, set bedtime or daily screen limits, review app time, and set Google Play maturity controls. Its coverage depends on the device, supervised account, country, and service. Google notes that restricted content may still appear through search or direct links, so these settings are not a complete web filter. Google’s Family Link help explains supported devices and limitations.

Google also offers controls for supervised YouTube accounts and YouTube Kids, such as content levels and settings for search and autoplay. Those are YouTube controls, not a universal filter for other social apps or websites.
Meta Family Center and Instagram supervision
Meta’s May 12, 2026 announcement says parents of teens enrolled in supervision can manage settings for Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger through Family Center. It also describes Instagram supervision features that show parents general topics their teen engages with. This is a topic-level view, not evidence that parents can read private messages. Meta describes Teen Accounts as including automatic privacy settings, limits on who can contact teens, and content protections.

Meta says Instagram topic insights are available globally in English; some announced notifications were planned for select markets. Check the settings available for the teen’s account and location rather than assuming every feature is present. Meta’s report that U.S. teen enrollment in Instagram supervision more than doubled year over year is a company-reported adoption figure, not evidence that supervision prevents harm. Meta’s announcement describes the features.
TikTok and Snapchat
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry guide points to practical checks such as TikTok time and content settings, Instagram privacy and content controls, Snapchat location settings, and platform reporting. Exact menus, eligibility rules, and availability can change. Check the apps’ current Family Pairing or Family Center help pages for the options on your child’s account; do not assume a setting works across every device or account. The guide also discusses private accounts, limiting direct messages from unknown people, location settings, and reporting. AACAP’s Social Media and Youth Mental Health guide offers a broader checklist.

Choose settings around the risk, not just the clock
- For sleep or school routines: agree on device-free periods, then use a schedule or downtime feature that fits the child’s actual devices. Consider separate limits for apps that tend to interrupt sleep or homework.
- For unwanted contact: review who can message or follow the account, whether unknown people can contact the child, and how to block or report an account. A screen-time limit does not control incoming messages.
- For personal information: discuss private-account preferences, location sharing, and what should not be posted publicly. Check location settings in each relevant app rather than assuming one device setting covers them all.
- For upsetting or age-inappropriate content: use platform content controls and, where relevant, supervised video settings. Treat filters as imperfect: Google says some restricted material may remain reachable through search or direct links.
- For a child who needs more independence: discuss which boundaries remain necessary and which can be relaxed. AACAP advises weighing controls against teen autonomy; supervision works best as part of a plan the young person understands.
What parents can and cannot see
Visibility differs from intervention. A tool may let a parent set a limit, review an app-use summary, receive a notification, or see a general topic summary; those functions are not interchangeable. Meta describes general Instagram topic insights for supervised teens, but that should not be read as access to private messages. Check the platform’s documentation for the exact information exposed to a parent, and tell your child what you will review.
Compatibility matters too. Family Link does not supervise iPhones, iPads, or computers other than Chromebooks. Apple’s announced features have device, software, and regional qualifications. A child may also use multiple accounts or browsers that do not share the same controls. Verify coverage on the specific devices and accounts in your household.

Keep screen-use numbers in perspective
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a May 20, 2026 announcement that national estimates put adolescents’ entertainment-screen use at seven to nine hours per day. That figure covers entertainment screens broadly; it is not a measure of social-media time alone and should not be treated as a target or a diagnosis. HHS’s announcement gives the statistic and its context.
