Infinite feeds, autoplay, notifications, visible likes, recommendations, and unrestricted session time are examples of engagement-oriented features identified by public-health guidance. They do not appear on every app, and they do not affect every child the same way.
How do social media apps keep kids scrolling?
Several design choices can make the next post, video, or piece of feedback immediately available. Some remove a clear point to stop; others prompt a return visit or shape what appears next. A young person’s experience also depends on the content, their circumstances, and the social context around their use.
The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory says platforms are often designed to maximize engagement and identifies notifications, autoplay, infinite scroll, visible popularity metrics, and recommendation algorithms as examples. The American Psychological Association (APA) likewise recommends adapting features such as likes, recommended content, unrestricted time limits, endless scrolling, and notices to adolescents’ social and cognitive abilities.
Infinite or endless scrolling
A feed that continues as the user moves down the screen has no obvious page-end cue. Without that natural pause, continuing to the next item may take less effort than deciding to open another page or leave. The APA specifically identifies endless scrolling as a feature that should be tailored to adolescents’ abilities.

Autoplay
Autoplay starts another video without requiring a separate choice. That can reduce the number of moments when a viewer might deliberately decide whether to keep watching. The Surgeon General includes autoplay among features associated with engagement-focused design.
Push notifications
Notifications bring an app or social update back to a user’s attention, potentially prompting them to reopen it. The Surgeon General names notifications as an engagement feature; the APA says alerts and notices should be appropriate to young users’ development.

Likes and popularity counts
Likes and other visible counts turn social feedback and relative popularity into numbers a user can see. The Surgeon General notes the quantifying and display of popularity, while the APA names the like button as a feature that may need adaptation for adolescents. The presence of a count does not mean all young people respond to it in the same way.
Recommendation algorithms
Recommendations select and surface content using information about a user and their activity. That can make another relevant item easy to find without searching for it. The Surgeon General lists recommendations as an engagement feature; the APA discusses the need for developmentally appropriate recommendations and risks associated with using young people’s data to personalize them.

Unrestricted session time
When there is no clear session end or user-facing time limit, it may be harder to notice how long a visit has lasted. The APA identifies unrestricted time limits as a feature that should be tailored to adolescents’ developmental needs.
Why can it be hard for kids to stop scrolling?
These features can reinforce one another. For example, a notification might bring a user back; personalized recommendations might supply more items; autoplay might continue a video sequence; and an endless feed might leave no clear endpoint. This is an illustration of how the features can fit together, not a claim that every app follows this exact sequence.

In plain terms, the design can reduce pauses that would otherwise give a young person a chance to notice the time, consider whether to continue, or switch to something else. That helps explain why stopping can feel difficult without implying that a child lacks willpower or that one feature inevitably causes harm.
How common is social media use among teens?
In its 2023 advisory, the U.S. Surgeon General reported that up to 95% of U.S. young people ages 13–17 use a social-media platform, nearly two-thirds of teenagers use social media every day, and one-third use it “almost constantly.” These figures describe reported use, not the effect of any one app feature.

The advisory also says that more than three hours a day of social-media use is associated with double the risk of mental-health problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety, among children and adolescents. This is an association and risk statement; it does not establish that scrolling features alone caused those outcomes.

No. Social media is neither inherently harmful nor beneficial for every young person. It can offer social connection, information, creative expression, and support. At the same time, some design features may contribute to use that feels excessive or difficult to regulate.
The APA says effects depend on adolescents’ characteristics and circumstances, as well as the content, features, and functions they encounter. It notes that causal findings are uncommon, long-term evidence is limited, and results do not apply equally to all youth. The Surgeon General also says important evidence gaps remain and the impacts are not fully understood. For those reasons, engagement-oriented design should be treated as one possible influence—not as proof of why a particular child is struggling or a diagnosis.
What can families do about hard-to-stop scrolling?
HHS recommends practical steps such as making a family media plan, creating tech-free zones, modeling healthy technology habits, and building age-appropriate digital literacy. Its 2026 screen-use overview groups family strategies around discussion, adult modeling, delaying access or setting age-appropriate limits, offering offline activities, and disconnecting at scheduled times, including before bed.
- Agree on household expectations. Make rules about when and where devices are used, including any tech-free zones, together where appropriate.
- Talk about design. Help young people recognize features such as autoplay, notifications, likes, and recommendations, and notice how those features affect their choices.
- Model the habits you want to encourage. Adults can also put devices away during agreed family times.
- Plan alternatives and stopping times. Schedule offline activities and a consistent time to disconnect, especially before bed.
- Use controls as one tool. Parental controls and household rules can support a family’s goals, but they do not replace discussion or responsible platform design.
How adults discuss limits may matter, too. In two preregistered field experiments with 2,733 adolescents, Bryan and colleagues tested messages intended to support motivation to control social-media use. A message connecting self-regulation with autonomy and social justice increased immediate motivation. At three months, researchers found increased awareness of design features, but did not find a significant overall condition effect on behavior change in the reported analysis. This is preliminary evidence about framing and awareness, not a guarantee that a particular conversation will change behavior.
