There is no universal best robotic-arm vendor for factory automation. The right choice is the arm—and the OEM or integrator behind it—that can meet your process, payload, reach, cycle-time, safety, interface, service, and cost requirements in the complete installed cell. Compare candidates against the same written task definition, then validate the leading option on a representative application before committing.

Define the job before comparing brands

Write down the operation the robot must perform: for example, pick and place, machine tending, welding, assembly, packaging, or palletizing. Include the part, the stations involved, how the part is presented, and what the robot must do at each point. These details determine which robot characteristics matter; a model’s headline payload or reach cannot establish suitability by itself.

Use one requirements sheet for every candidate. That makes it easier to compare vendor answers and quotations on equal terms rather than weighing unrelated marketing claims.

Work through the requirements in order

1. Specify the complete moving load

Calculate the load the arm must carry, not just the workpiece. Include the gripper or other end effector, brackets, cabling, and any load offset from the mounting face. Ask the vendor to check the selected model against the actual load, orientation, reach, and application. Payload figures can vary by configuration: Universal Robots lists the UR20-1750 with a 20 kg standard payload and a separately stated 25 kg extended payload. Neither figure alone confirms that it can handle a particular tool-and-part combination.

2. Map the working envelope

Document the stations the arm must reach, the approach angles required, its mounting position, nearby obstacles, and the available footprint. Check whether one arm can serve every station without collisions or awkward paths. A longer reach may help with station coverage, but it does not by itself demonstrate that the arm can reach each point in the needed orientation.

KUKA’s industrial robot finder illustrates useful selection filters: application, payload, reach, mounting position, construction type, protection class, and whether the robot is a cobot. Ask every shortlisted supplier for equivalent model-selection information and application-specific documentation.

3. Set performance and process-quality targets

State the required cycle time, repeatability, speed, and process quality. Then request model-specific documentation and application validation against your layout and trajectory. A published maximum speed or repeatability figure does not guarantee the cycle time or quality your process will achieve: the path, payload, tooling, and cell layout all matter.

For example, Universal Robots publishes a maximum TCP speed of 5 m/s for the UR20-1750. Treat that as a model specification to investigate, not a prediction of production cycle time.

4. Check the environment and interfaces

Confirm that the robot is suitable for the actual installation environment. Verify ingress protection and any cleanroom, washdown, or process-specific requirements with the OEM; do not infer suitability from the product family name or a general-purpose specification.

List the required controller and plant communications, tooling connections, I/O, programming workflow, and any simulation or integration needs. Universal Robots publishes tool-connector details for the UR20-1750 and product-family information for its line. Request comparable details from other vendors, including any required options or components.

5. Assess safety for the complete cell

A collaborative robot’s capabilities are one input to safety design, not proof that a particular application needs no safeguards. The hazards and operating conditions of the complete workcell determine the required risk reduction and protective measures. Consider the robot, tooling, workpiece, speed, access, and the way people interact with the cell.

The International Federation of Robotics identifies ISO 10218-1, ISO 10218-2, and ISO/TS 15066 among robotics safety standards. The applicable editions and legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and are not established here. Confirm them with the responsible safety professional and relevant regulator before finalizing the design.

6. Compare support and total installed cost

Ask who will supply and take responsibility for each part of the project. A robot quotation may not include everything required to run production. Compare quotes that use the same task definition and explicitly account for the robot, controller options, tooling, guarding or other safety equipment, integration, commissioning, training, spare parts, and ongoing service.

Evaluate local integrator familiarity, OEM response, service coverage, parts availability, and training alongside the initial price. KUKA provides customer-service and robot-periphery pathways; Universal Robots offers a route to request pricing. These are useful purchasing contacts, not comparable installed-cost figures.

7. Validate a representative application

Before making a final selection, ask the vendor or integrator to demonstrate the actual payload, trajectory, tooling, cycle, and interfaces—or to validate them in an agreed representative setup. Define what counts as a pass, including the required process quality and cycle time, before the demonstration. A demonstration on a different payload or simplified path may not answer the production question.

Criterion What to compare or request
Payload and load Capacity for the workpiece, end effector, brackets, cabling, orientation, reach, and load offset.
Reach and footprint Working envelope, approach angles, mounting options, obstacles, and coverage of all required stations.
Performance and quality Cycle-time feasibility, repeatability, speed, and evidence against the process-quality target.
Environment Ingress protection and documented suitability for any cleanroom, washdown, or process conditions.
Controls and integration Controller, plant interfaces, tooling connections, I/O, programming expectations, and simulation fit.
Cell safety Risk-reduction approach and supporting evidence for the complete cell and its operating conditions.
Service and lifecycle Local integrator experience, OEM response, spare parts, training, support coverage, and ongoing service.
Total cost Comparable installed and lifecycle quotations, including tooling, safety equipment, integration, commissioning, and service.

Where a supplier cannot provide evidence for a requirement, record that gap rather than treating an unverified capability as a match. The comparison should separate published model specifications from demonstrated performance in the proposed cell.

What published examples can—and cannot—tell you

Universal Robots lists the UR20-1750 at 1,750 mm reach, with a 20 kg standard payload, a 25 kg extended payload, and a maximum TCP speed of 5 m/s; its product information also describes the tool connector and provides a pricing-request route. These figures are a concrete example of the model-level data buyers can collect. They do not establish fit for a specific task without checking load, trajectory, cycle, safety, and integration.

KUKA’s finder is another example of a vendor selection tool, with filters for application, payload, reach, mounting position, construction type, protection class, and cobot status, as well as links to robot peripherals and customer service resources. Treat vendor pages as sources for that vendor’s specifications and selection options—not as independent evidence that one brand outperforms another.

Keep market size separate from vendor fit

The International Federation of Robotics reported that 542,000 industrial robots were installed worldwide in 2024 and that 74% of new deployments that year were in Asia. In 2025, IFR president Takayuki Ito described 2024 as the second-highest annual installation count in the organization’s history, 2% below the record set two years earlier. These figures describe global installations and geography; they do not identify the best supplier for an individual factory or establish local service quality.

Make the decision on the installed cell

Select the candidate that demonstrates the required application performance and can be supported at the factory’s location on acceptable, comparable lifecycle terms. Do not infer a winner from a single model specification, a brand’s general reputation, or the label “cobot.” The decisive comparison is between complete, validated cell proposals—not robot arms in isolation.
