The company describes them as part of a case’s patina. For dust and dirt, use only a damp cloth or non-abrasive sponge with clean water. If damage affects how the suitcase works—or you want a cosmetic repair assessed—submit a RIMOWA repair request rather than trying to polish or reshape the case at home.
What you can—and cannot—fix at home
RIMOWA’s official care FAQ says: “We like to consider any deep dents or scratches as the unique patina of your case, as these cannot be removed.” That guidance specifically addresses aluminium cases; the company does not provide a verified do-it-yourself method for removing deep dents or scratches.
Cleaning is different from repair. A damp cloth or non-abrasive sponge with clean water can remove dust and dirt, but it will not restore scratched or dented material. The same basic approach appears in RIMOWA’s owner manual for aluminium and polycarbonate cases.
How to clean dust or dirt safely
- Dampen a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge with clean water. Do not use a scouring pad or abrasive cloth.
- Wipe the dirty area gently. This is surface cleaning, not a method for removing a scratch or changing a dent.
- Stop if the mark remains or the surface appears damaged. Ask RIMOWA Care for advice rather than escalating to a stronger cleaner or abrasive treatment.
For this limited cleaning task, a soft microfiber cloth can be used if it is non-abrasive; it is not a scratch-removal tool.

Cleaners and DIY fixes to avoid
RIMOWA warns against scouring detergents, abrasive cloths or sponges, window-cleaning agents, vinegar-based cleaners, disinfectants, solvents, aggressive alcohols, petroleum distillates and nail polish remover. These can damage the case’s surface.
Do not try to polish out a scratch with an abrasive compound or push a dent back into shape as a universal home fix. RIMOWA does not provide such a repair method. Its manual mentions isopropyl alcohol for stubborn or sticky residue, while the care FAQ warns against aggressive alcohols; because that distinction depends on the product and the residue, do not treat alcohol as a general-purpose case cleaner. Follow the guidance for your specific case or ask RIMOWA Care.
When to ask RIMOWA for a repair assessment
Use RIMOWA’s repair request to describe the damage and ask for an assessment. RIMOWA says owners can begin online and then arrange an in-store drop-off or send the request to its Care Experts. Cosmetic wear and tear that is not covered by a guarantee may still be assessed and quoted.

A dent or scratch that is only cosmetic is different from damage that affects function. If a component is not working properly, explain that clearly in the request; do not assume that a cosmetic mark and a functional fault receive the same guarantee treatment.

Check the guarantee that applies to your case
Guarantee terms depend on purchase date and geography. RIMOWA’s US care-and-repair page says functional damage on suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022 is covered by its Lifetime Guarantee. That statement does not establish coverage for cosmetic wear, older purchases, or purchases in every country. The owner manual sets out distinct terms for older purchases and other geographies.

Before assuming a repair is covered, check the terms for the country where the case was purchased and its purchase date on RIMOWA Care and Repair and in the owner manual. If the issue is cosmetic or the applicable terms are unclear, ask RIMOWA to assess it; an out-of-guarantee repair may be quoted.
