To stop an iPhone Focus from muting an important alert, keep the Focus on and allow the specific person or app through: open Settings > Focus > [the relevant Focus] > People or Apps, choose Allow Notifications From, then add the contact or app. If alerts still do not appear, check the app’s notification permission, automatic Focus schedules, and whether an Apple Watch or another Apple device is receiving them instead.
Allow a specific person or app through Focus
First identify which Focus is active. Open Control Center and check the Focus button. You can tap the active Focus to turn it off temporarily, or open its settings to change its rules. Do Not Disturb is only one Focus; Work, Sleep, Driving, Reduce Interruptions, and other profiles can also affect notifications.
Allow calls or messages from a person
- Open Settings > Focus and select the Focus that is muting the contact.
- Tap People, choose Allow Notifications From, and add the contact from Contacts.
- Review the call options on that screen, including whether to allow repeated calls from the same person within three minutes.
Allow notifications from an app
- Open Settings > Focus and select the relevant Focus.
- Tap Apps, choose Allow Notifications From, and add the app.
- If appropriate, enable Time Sensitive Notifications. Apple says this lets apps send notifications they classify as time-sensitive immediately; it does not make every alert from every app time-sensitive.
These controls let you keep a Focus’s other restrictions while allowing selected contacts or apps. Apple documents the People, Apps, and time-sensitive controls in its iPhone Focus guide.
Check whether the app is allowed to notify you at all
Focus filtering and app notification permissions are separate. If an app remains quiet even when the relevant Focus is off, open Settings > Notifications > [app] and check that Allow Notifications is on. Also review where alerts are allowed to appear, such as on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as banners.

Stop Do Not Disturb from turning itself back on
If you turn Do Not Disturb off in Control Center but it returns later, check for an automatic schedule: open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > Set a Schedule and adjust or remove any schedule you do not want. Focus can activate under scheduled times or other conditions, so a manual Control Center change may not prevent its next activation.
Also check Control Center for another active Focus. Apple notes that if Do Not Disturb is not the active option, another profile such as Personal, Work, Sleep, Reduce Interruptions, or Driving may be in effect. Its instructions are in Apple’s Do Not Disturb guide.

Check your Apple Watch and other linked devices
An alert missing from the iPhone may have been routed to an Apple Watch instead. Apple says notifications normally go to either the Apple Watch or iPhone, not both: when the iPhone is unlocked, alerts go to the iPhone; when it is locked or asleep, they may go to an unlocked Watch. Check the Watch and the iPhone’s lock state when testing an alert.

Give an emergency contact a separate override
For a contact whose calls or texts must make sound even while notifications are silenced, consider Emergency Bypass. Open the person’s contact card, tap Edit, open Ringtone or Text Tone, and turn on Emergency Bypass. This is a contact-level setting that allows sounds and vibrations from that person; use it selectively. Apple’s Focus guide describes this option alongside its other ways to manage interruptions.
Choose the narrowest fix that fits the alert

For most routine alerts, allowing only the needed person or app is more targeted than disabling Focus altogether. Driving Focus has a specific limitation: Apple’s notification guidance says apps cannot be allowed through it using the usual app allow-list. If Driving Focus is active, turn it off only when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Apple Intelligence and notification prioritization
On eligible devices and software, Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing can allow notifications judged important and silence those judged less important. Availability depends on device, software, language, and region; check Apple’s current Focus guide for eligibility. This feature is separate from explicitly allowing or silencing a particular person or app, whose direct Focus settings remain the relevant controls for those notifications.
