For the sampled Cabin models, choose the RIMOWA Essential for a lighter case and lower US list price; choose the RIMOWA Original if you want an anodized-aluminum shell and are comfortable with more weight and visible wear. Their listed capacity is nearly identical, so the decision is mainly about material, weight, price, and how you feel about scratches and dents.

What makes the two suitcases different?
Essential: lighter polycarbonate
The Essential Cabin’s listed weight is 3.2 kg, 1.1 kg less than the sampled Original Cabin before either case is packed. That difference can matter when lifting a case into an overhead bin or when your airline limits total baggage weight. The Essential is also 1 cm narrower in the listed Cabin dimensions and has 1 L more listed volume—a small capacity difference, not a major packing advantage.

Original: anodized aluminum and visible wear
The Original’s aluminum shell is the defining reason to choose it. RIMOWA says aluminum takes the shape of an impact and describes scratches and dents as patina: “We consider any scratches or dents that appear as your suitcase’s patina.” That is the maker’s framing of cosmetic wear, not evidence that the Original is more durable than the Essential. If you want a case to retain a pristine appearance, consider whether visible marks would bother you.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Essential if…
- You want to carry less empty weight.
- You prefer polycarbonate to aluminum.
- The lower US price listed at the time of comparison matters to you.
- You value the slightly greater listed volume, while recognizing the difference is only 1 L in these models.
Choose the Original if…
- You specifically want an anodized-aluminum suitcase.
- You like the character that visible scratches and dents can acquire with use.
- You accept the additional listed weight and the higher point-in-time US price.
Both sampled Cabins list a Multiwheel system, TSA-approved locks, and a stage-free telescopic handle, so those shared features do not distinguish the two. For either one, check the dimensions against your airline’s current cabin-baggage rules before buying; RIMOWA also advises contacting the airline about hand-luggage restrictions. The Original is 1 cm wider in the listed variants, but airline allowances differ and can change.

Guarantee, care, and repairs
RIMOWA’s guarantee applies to new suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022, and covers functional damage under its terms. It excludes cosmetic wear and tear, misuse, and abuse, so “lifetime guarantee” does not mean scratches or dents are covered. Read the RIMOWA Guarantee FAQs and use the official claim process for an eligible functional issue.
For repairs outside the guarantee, RIMOWA says its care experts can assess the suitcase and provide an estimate; availability and cost depend on the repair and service location.
