Before you approve a command in GitHub Copilot CLI, read the entire command and consider what it can change, access, or send. Choose the narrowest approval option, work in a directory you trust, and use sandboxing and limited tool permissions for higher-risk tasks. GitHub advises users to review suggested commands carefully; its safety checks are a warning layer, not a guarantee that every dangerous command will be caught.

Review the command before approving it

When Copilot CLI requests approval, pause and inspect the exact command it proposes—not just the task you asked it to perform. GitHub’s security guidance says to review suggested commands carefully.

Check what the command targets and what could happen if it runs:

  • Files and directories: Which paths will it read, create, overwrite, move, or delete? Look for recursive operations and broad path patterns.
  • System state: Could it change permissions, install software, alter configuration, or affect services?
  • Network activity: Does it download, upload, or send data to a remote host?
  • Secrets: Could it read credentials, environment variables, tokens, or other sensitive files—or expose them through output or a network request?

These are practical review questions based on the risk categories GitHub documents, not a formal checklist or proof that a command is safe. If you cannot tell what an operation does, reject it and ask Copilot to explain it or suggest a narrower alternative.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the narrowest approval scope

At an approval prompt, Copilot CLI offers ways to allow a tool, reject it, or allow it for the rest of the session. The scope matters: session approval can let that tool run with any options for the remainder of the session, not just the arguments shown in the current command. See GitHub’s Copilot CLI usage guide for the approval workflow.

Choice Duration What to consider
Allow once Applies to that use. Use when you have reviewed this command but do not want to approve later invocations automatically.
Allow for the session Applies for the rest of the current session. May allow the tool with different options, so it can cover actions broader than the command currently displayed.
Reject and give direction Does not approve the proposed use. Use when the command is unclear or too broad; tell Copilot what to change or ask for a safer approach.

Be especially cautious about broad approval for a command family such as rm. A later invocation with different paths or options can have much wider effects than the command you just inspected.

Work in a directory you trust

Copilot CLI may read, modify, and execute files in and below its working directory. Use it from a directory whose contents are appropriate for that access, and avoid placing untrusted repositories or executable files within a context where the CLI can operate on them. GitHub’s security considerations also describe trusted-directory choices that can persist across sessions, so review those choices rather than treating trust as a one-time prompt.

Limit tools and permissions

Tool availability and permission to use a tool are separate controls: limiting which tools Copilot CLI can access does not by itself determine which operations need approval. GitHub documents allow and deny options, with deny rules taking precedence over allow rules. Consult the current configuration guide before changing these settings, since option names and behavior may change.

For programmatic use, GitHub recommends granting only the permissions needed. Avoid broad options such as --allow-all or --yolo (also available as /yolo in the CLI workflow) in an ordinary environment: they give Copilot wide authority without individual command review. GitHub advises reserving broad allow-all settings for sandbox environments. Details are in its CLI usage documentation and configuration documentation.

Use sandboxing as containment, not approval

Sandboxing can restrict access to files or networks, adding a layer of containment compared with ordinary local execution. It does not make an unknown command safe or replace reviewing its effects. Available controls depend on the execution environment; GitHub’s configuration guide describes local and cloud sandboxing options.

If sandbox policy blocks a command, read the reason and inspect the command before deciding what to do. GitHub documents a bypass prompt; approving it reruns the command outside the sandbox, where the sandbox restriction no longer contains that execution. Do not bypass simply to clear the prompt. Reconsider whether the operation is needed and whether you can use a narrower command or a more appropriate environment. See GitHub’s security considerations.

Understand what command safety analysis can—and cannot—tell you

GitHub says Copilot CLI’s command safety analysis looks for patterns such as recursive deletion, system modifications, network exfiltration, credential access, and dangerous inline environment-variable assignments. High-risk commands may trigger additional warnings and require explicit confirmation. Sandbox policy can also block an operation or offer a bypass.

The documentation describes these checks but does not provide a measured detection rate or guarantee that every unsafe command will be identified. Treat a warning as a reason to investigate, and the absence of a warning as no substitute for reading the command yourself. For the documented behavior, see About GitHub Copilot CLI.

A practical approval routine

  1. Pause at the prompt. Read the full command, including options, paths, and chained operations.
  2. Trace its effects. Check file targets, possible deletion or overwrite, system changes, network use, and access to secrets.
  3. Decline unclear commands. Select No and tell Copilot what to do differently, or ask it to explain the command and offer a safer alternative.
  4. Check your working directory. Make sure it is trusted and suitable for the file access the CLI may have.
  5. Approve narrowly. Prefer approval for this use over session-wide approval unless you have considered the broader scope.
  6. Contain higher-risk work. Restrict available tools and permissions; use a suitable sandbox where appropriate. Treat any request to bypass sandbox policy as a new decision about containment.
