To export Slack messages, a Workspace Owner or Admin opens the workspace’s export controls, chooses a date range, and downloads a ZIP when Slack emails that it is ready. The standard export covers public-channel messages and file links—not the files themselves. Private channels and direct messages require an eligible, approved export option, and the available scope depends on the plan, role, retention settings, and purpose.

Who can export Slack messages—and which conversations are included?

Slack’s built-in export options are controlled by workspace or organization administrators. Being a workspace member does not by itself grant access to export conversations. The scope also varies by plan:

Plan or environment Export access and scope Important condition
Free and Pro Workspace Owners and Admins can export public-channel messages and file links. Private channels and DMs are not part of the ordinary export. Slack may allow a broader export in exceptional circumstances, such as valid legal process, member consent, or a right or requirement under applicable law; an application and justification are required.
Business+ Public-channel exports are available. Workspace Owners may apply for self-serve exports covering public and private channels and DMs. Approval is required; plan eligibility alone does not guarantee access. Approved workspaces can schedule recurring weekly or monthly exports.
Enterprise Workspace Owners and Admins can export public channels. Org Owners can request organization-level self-serve exports that may cover all channels and DMs or a custom scope. An approved third-party app can also use the Discovery API for organization-level exports. Organization-level access belongs to Org Owners. Custom exports may be scoped by conversation type, member, or workspace and may be provided as JSON or TXT.

Slack also documents channel audit exports in CSV on Business+ and Enterprise. Available options and plan names can change, so check the export controls in your own workspace before relying on a particular scope.

How to export Slack messages as a ZIP

For the standard public-channel export, use Slack’s desktop workspace settings. The export is prepared as a ZIP, and Slack emails you when it is ready.

  1. Open Admin in the sidebar.
  2. Select Workspace settings, then Security.
  3. Open Import & export data and select the Export tab.
  4. Choose the date range and click Start Export.
  5. Wait for Slack’s email, return to the workspace export page, and download the ZIP marked ready.

The labels may shift as Slack updates its interface; follow the export controls shown in your workspace. Business+ and Enterprise workspaces may have additional options, but broader conversation access can require an application or organization-level request. For Slack’s current workflow, see Export your workspace data.

What a Slack export contains—and what it leaves out

Messages and file links

A standard workspace export provides JSON data for public-channel messages and links to files. It does not package the uploaded files themselves. Slack’s import/export guide states, “Data exports will include links to files, but not the files themselves.” This distinction matters if you need a portable archive: a link is not a copy of the file content, and access to a linked file may depend on Slack and workspace permissions. Slack describes Enterprise Discovery API exports separately as including files through direct download links. See Slack’s Guide to Slack import and export tools.

Date limits, deletions, and retention

Do not assume every export includes a workspace’s entire history. Slack says Free workspaces can export file links only from the last 90 days. Separately, Slack’s import/export guidance says data more than a year old is not included in Free exports, and describes limits on older deleted content for exceptional exports. These are different limits; the 90-day file-link rule is not a universal message-history window.

Retention settings can remove data before an export is made, and Slack says those settings affect what appears in exports. For example, Slack documents configurable policies that keep messages for one year and then delete them after 90 days in specified plan settings; paid and Enterprise settings can also offer custom timelines or no automatic deletion. Those are policy options, not universal defaults. Review your workspace’s retention configuration and deletion history before treating an export as a complete archive. Slack explains the controls in Customize data retention in Slack.

Slack Connect conversations

Shared channels and DMs with external organizations have additional boundaries. What appears can depend on which organization sent the content and on the other organization’s retention settings. In the documented workspace-export cases, file links in private shared channels or DMs are included only when shared by a member of the organization doing the export. An export from one organization therefore should not be assumed to contain the other organization’s full conversation history.

Can you use a Slack export to migrate messages?

Slack supports importing workspace export ZIPs into Free, Pro, and Business+ destinations, subject to channel, member, and conversation restrictions. Direct imports into Enterprise organizations are not supported; Slack’s suggested route is to import into a separate workspace and then migrate that workspace into the organization.

  • Public channels: A public channel can be merged with an existing public channel.
  • Private channels: A private channel cannot be merged into an existing private channel; the import creates a new channel.
  • Direct messages: Import requires an export containing all channels and conversations, and depends on all DM participants being imported.
  • Slack Connect: Imported messages and file links are constrained by who sent them.

Before a consequential move, test the export and import flow and check how Slack maps members and channels. Avoid editing the export ZIP: Slack warns that modifying export files can cause import problems. See Import data from one Slack workspace to another for the current import process and restrictions.

Is a Slack export suitable for compliance archiving?

A standard workspace ZIP is useful for a one-time copy of the data in its permitted scope, but it is not the same as a managed compliance archive. For recurring archiving, eDiscovery, or data-loss-prevention workflows, Slack documents an Enterprise Discovery API route for Org Owners using approved third-party apps. The API supports organizational content export and archiving solutions; access and scope are governed by the organization and Slack’s applicable policies.

Business+ workspaces with approval for all-conversation exports can schedule weekly or monthly exports, but that is distinct from the Enterprise Discovery API route. Organizations remain responsible for ensuring that monitoring and export practices comply with employment agreements, company policies, privacy requirements, and applicable law. Notice to employees may be required. A standard export should not be treated as blanket authorization to monitor employees.
