Before choosing a DIY phone kit, check the exact modem and board variant, its cellular-band overlap with your carrier, whether the carrier accepts the finished device for VoLTE calling, what components are actually included, and what programming and assembly remain. A cellular development board can be a useful starting point, but it is not automatically a complete phone—and matching frequency bands alone does not guarantee service.

What does “DIY phone kit” mean?

The label can describe very different projects. Some are controller-and-modem development boards for adding cellular functions to an electronics project. Others are custom phone builds that require you to assemble or design more of the hardware. Treat a board with cellular connectivity as a phone subsystem unless the current product listing confirms that it includes the display, audio hardware, battery, enclosure, antenna, and other parts needed for your intended build.

The comparison below separates three approaches documented by their makers: a cellular development board, a family of regional modem-board variants, and an older custom cellphone project. They are not interchangeable ready-to-build phone kits.

How do the main DIY approaches compare?

Approach What is documented What you still need to verify
LILYGO T-SIM7670G-S3 LILYGO describes an ESP32-S3 paired with a SIMCom SIM7670G LTE Cat-1 modem. Its documentation lists voice-call support, GNSS, USB-C programming, a Nano SIM slot, a battery connection, and separate antenna connectors. Whether the exact board and firmware work with your carrier; what the seller’s current package includes; and what display, audio, enclosure, battery, or other phone components your project needs. The board documentation does not establish that it is a complete phone kit.
LILYGO T-A7670X variants LILYGO says the variants share a PCB but use different modem chips. Its documentation describes E, G, and SA versions with different regional band support, and provides Arduino or PlatformIO setup information and examples. The precise modem suffix and band table for the board being sold, then compatibility with your country and carrier. Regional labels such as “global” are a starting point, not proof of coverage or carrier approval.
Custom cellphone build described by Arduino Blog in 2013 The project account documents an open-source cellphone design and cautions that surface-mount soldering experience is advisable. Whether the design’s hardware and cellular technology are appropriate for current service in your area. It is an educational design example, not evidence of present-day carrier compatibility or a current product kit.

For a concrete modem-feature example, SIMCom lists VoLTE among the capabilities of its A7676E modem. That establishes a feature of the modem family, not carrier approval for a particular development board, firmware, antenna setup, or finished phone.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How do you check cellular compatibility?

Start with the country and carrier you intend to use. There is no universal answer for whether a DIY board will connect or place calls: the exact board revision, modem, firmware, antenna arrangement, and carrier rules all matter.

  1. Identify the exact hardware. Record the board model, modem suffix, and revision from the product listing or board documentation. Do not treat similarly named regional variants as equivalent.
  2. Compare supported bands with the carrier. Use the band table for that exact modem variant and the carrier’s current frequency information for your location. A regional name is not a substitute for checking the actual bands.
  3. Check voice-over-LTE support. Confirm that the modem and intended firmware support VoLTE, then check whether the carrier allows VoLTE calls from that device. Modem capability alone does not establish that the finished build can make calls.
  4. Check carrier acceptance separately. Use the carrier’s current device or bring-your-own-device checker and review any certification or eligibility conditions. Band overlap does not prove that a carrier will accept a home-built device.
  5. Recheck before buying and before relying on the build. Carrier policies and network status can change. Confirm current requirements for your particular market rather than assuming an older project or listing remains compatible.

For example, Rogers’ Canadian BYOD guidance says: “Your mobile phone or device must be using LTE and makes phone calls over LTE, known as Voice over LTE (VoLTE).” Rogers also advises customers to compare device specifications with its frequency bands and notes that VoLTE may not work on every device bought elsewhere even when frequencies match. That is Rogers’ guidance for its network, not a universal rule stated by every carrier.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Legacy 2G-only hardware is a particularly risky basis for a current phone unless you have verified that the target network still supports it. Network retirements and device policies vary by place and date; an older build’s documentation does not establish present service availability.

Which parts are included—and what might be missing?

Read the exact seller listing for the exact board variant. Documentation can tell you what the board itself has, but it does not necessarily tell you what is in a particular sales package. Check each item rather than inferring that “phone kit” means all-in-one.

  • Controller and programming connection: identify the microcontroller and whether the board has a usable programming port or requires additional hardware.
  • Phone interfaces: check for the display, microphone, speaker or audio output, buttons, and any supporting components your design requires.
  • Power and physical build: verify whether a battery is supplied, whether the board only provides a battery connection, and whether an enclosure, cables, or mounting hardware are included.
  • Documentation and support: look for setup instructions, example code, library support, and a board target that matches the precise model.

For the T-SIM7670G-S3, LILYGO documents a battery connection and antenna connectors; those descriptions do not mean a battery or antennas are necessarily included in every seller’s package. Confirm contents on the listing you plan to buy.

How much programming and assembly should you expect?

Development-board route

LILYGO documents Arduino and PlatformIO workflows for supported boards and points to LTE, GPS, and AT-command examples for the T-A7670 family. Those resources can help you exercise board and modem functions, but they are not the same as a finished phone operating system. Before choosing a board, check that examples exist for the exact model and the specific features you want to implement.

Custom-hardware route

A custom cellphone design can involve wiring, PCB work, enclosure decisions, and component assembly. The Arduino Blog’s 2013 project account cautions against attempting its build without experience soldering surface-mount components. That makes it a better fit for an electronics learning project than for someone seeking a simple, low-assembly kit.

Assembly work varies by product and by what the seller supplies. A development board may reduce the need to design a cellular subsystem from scratch, but it does not remove the need to verify connectors, peripherals, code, and carrier requirements.

Which option fits your project?

  • Choose a cellular development board if you want to prototype cellular functions and are comfortable adding or integrating the phone interfaces and software your project needs. Compare the exact board and modem variant, not just the brand name.
  • Choose a regional modem-board variant only after matching its documented bands to your target network and checking carrier eligibility. LILYGO’s E, G, and SA labels identify different variants, but they do not guarantee service in every country associated with a label.
  • Choose an older open-source cellphone design for the learning value of its hardware and software approach, not as a default recommendation for current cellular service. Verify network support independently before building around legacy hardware.

The best comparison is therefore not simply “which kit has the most features?” It is which exact hardware can meet your local carrier’s current requirements, includes enough of the components you need, and has a programming and assembly workload you are prepared to take on.
