Do Not Disturb is one of the Focus modes on iPhone—not a separate feature competing with Focus. Focus is the broader system for managing notifications and, optionally, the screens and app information associated with an activity. Choose Do Not Disturb for general quiet; choose another Focus, such as Work, Personal, Sleep, or a custom profile, when you want different rules for a particular situation.
How Focus and Do Not Disturb fit together
Apple describes Do Not Disturb as a Focus option. You can find it at Settings > Focus or select it from the Focus control in Control Center. Focus is the umbrella; Do Not Disturb is one profile within it.
That distinction matters when setting expectations: activating a Focus does not necessarily block every notification. You can configure a profile to silence notifications broadly or allow selected people and apps through. Apple’s iOS 27 user guide also describes Focus as a way to minimize distractions while concentrating on a task: Set up a Focus on iPhone. Menu wording can differ by iOS version and language.
Which one should you choose?

The profiles are not mutually exclusive alternatives in the sense of separate systems. They are different configurations within Focus, and selecting a new Focus turns off the different Focus that was active.

What a Focus can control
People and apps
For each Focus, choose which people and apps are allowed to notify you, or which ones are silenced. You can also configure time-sensitive notifications. If you want to let urgent contact attempts through, review the repeated-calls option and consider Emergency Bypass for selected emergency contacts. These controls reduce interruptions but are not a guarantee that no alert or call can ever get through. See Apple’s instructions: Allow or silence notifications for a Focus on iPhone.
Lock Screen, Home Screen, and app information
A Focus can be linked to a Lock Screen and selected Home Screen pages, helping you associate a display with an activity. You can also add Focus filters that determine what information certain apps show while that Focus is active. Apple notes that Focus filters do not sync across devices, even when Share Across Devices is enabled.

Focus Status
Focus Status can let people know that your notifications are silenced. If you do not want to share that status, review Settings > Focus > Focus Status. Sharing can be disabled globally or adjusted for an individual Focus.
How to set up or turn on a Focus
- Configure a profile: Open Settings > Focus, then select Do Not Disturb or another Focus. Set its allowed or silenced people and apps, display options, linked Lock Screen or Home Screen, and any available filters.
- Create a profile if needed: In Focus settings, add a custom Focus and choose its name, color, and icon, then configure its rules.
- Turn it on: Open Control Center, tap Focus, and choose the profile. Depending on the iOS interface, you may be able to select an ending point, such as for an hour or until you leave a location.
- Automate it: Go to Settings > Focus > [profile] > Add Schedule, then choose a time, location, or app trigger. Set the Sleep schedule in Health instead.

Why Do Not Disturb may turn on—or stay on—unexpectedly
- Check which Focus is active: Open Control Center and inspect the Focus control. Another active Focus can also silence calls, alerts, and notifications.
- Review Do Not Disturb schedules: Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and inspect its schedules. A time, location, or app automation may be turning it on.
- Check Sleep: Sleep Focus follows the schedule set in Health, so review that schedule if Sleep Focus is the one activating.

Focus settings can be shared across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. An Apple Watch can also activate a Focus on the iPhone. However, Focus filters are an exception: Apple says they do not sync across devices even when Share Across Devices is on. See Use Focus on Apple Watch for Apple Watch details.
