To check whether a DDR5 kit will work in your PC, verify the exact CPU and motherboard models, then compare the kit’s full part number and configuration against the manufacturers’ specifications, CPU-support list, and memory QVL. A DDR5 label alone does not confirm compatibility, and a kit’s advertised speed may require enabling an overclocking profile rather than running at its default setting.
What to check before choosing a DDR5 kit
Write down the complete model of your processor, motherboard, and memory kit. Include motherboard suffixes or revision numbers where available, and use the kit’s full product or part number—not just its brand or advertised speed. Support can vary by CPU, board model, BIOS version, and how many modules you install.

- CPU: supported memory type, maximum capacity, channel count, and official data rate.
- Motherboard: CPU support list, required BIOS version, memory QVL, and DIMM population guidance.
- Memory kit: exact part number, total capacity, number of modules, rated speed, latency, and supported XMP or EXPO profile.
Check the CPU’s memory specifications
Look up the exact processor on its manufacturer’s specification page. Intel’s memory information guide describes how to find the processor’s supported memory type, maximum capacity, channel count, and speed. Use the specification for your particular CPU SKU; processor-family figures are not a guarantee for every model or system configuration.
For context, Intel’s current support article lists maximum data rates of up to 4800 MT/s for listed 12th-generation Core i5 desktop processors, and up to 4800 or 5600 MT/s for listed 13th- and 14th-generation Core i5 desktop processors. These are group-level specifications, not measured performance results or a promise that a given kit will run at that rate. The exact CPU, motherboard, number of DIMMs, and memory settings matter.

Confirm that the motherboard supports the CPU
Open the manufacturer’s support page for your exact motherboard model and find its CPU support list. Search for the exact processor and note any minimum BIOS version or update requirement. ASUS’s CPU and memory support FAQ explains how to locate these model-specific lists. A CPU appearing on the list may still require a particular BIOS version, so check that detail before assembly or purchase.
Search the motherboard’s memory QVL
On the same motherboard support page, open the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendor List) and search for the memory kit’s exact part number. Check that the listed entry matches the configuration you intend to use: capacity, number of modules, speed, and any profile or CPU/socket filters the vendor provides. ASUS says its QVL can be searched by model and filtered by vendor, size, speed, socket support, and memory type in its QVL instructions.
A QVL records memory configurations the board vendor has checked; it is useful evidence, not a universal compatibility guarantee. A kit missing from the list is not automatically incompatible, and a listed kit is not guaranteed under every BIOS version or setting. Intel advises checking the board manual or asking the motherboard maker about a particular memory brand and model in its memory compatibility guidance. If the result is unclear, contact the board maker with the exact CPU, board revision, BIOS, and kit part number.
Understand the difference between default and advertised speed
A kit’s box may advertise a rate available through an overclocking memory profile rather than the default setting. ASUS’s PRIME B840M-A manual says that default memory frequency depends on the module’s Serial Presence Detect (SPD) information, and that some overclocking memory can initially run below its vendor-marked rate. Check the motherboard and CPU specifications for support of the intended data rate, then consult the board manual before enabling XMP or AMD EXPO. The PRIME B650-PLUS WIFI specifications list AMD EXPO support, while its manual notes that supported data rates vary with the CPU and memory configuration.
If predictable operation is more important than tuning, start at the default memory settings. Treat an XMP or EXPO profile as a configuration to validate on your specific system, not a guaranteed result for every DDR5 motherboard and processor.

Install modules in the slots specified by the manual
Use the motherboard’s own memory population diagram or table; slot order is not universal. For example, the ASUS PRIME B650-PLUS WIFI manual shows a two-module configuration in slots A2 and B2. That layout applies to that board, not every motherboard. The manual also advises matching CAS latency and, for best compatibility, using modules with the same vendor and version or date code. A single matched kit is generally easier to validate than combining separately purchased kits.
DDR5 modules fit DDR5 slots only. The notch differs between DDR generations, so do not try to install DDR4 memory in a DDR5 motherboard. Check the board manual before handling or seating the modules.
Compare two DDR5 kits on the details that affect your build
| Comparison | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Board validation | Whether the exact part number and intended module count appear in the motherboard’s memory QVL. |
| Capacity and layout | Total capacity and whether the kit uses two, four, or another number of DIMMs; check the board and CPU limits for that configuration. |
| Speed and latency | Rated data rate and latency, plus the CPU’s official memory specification and motherboard support. |
| Memory profile | Whether the kit’s XMP or EXPO profile is supported by the motherboard and appropriate for the platform. |
| Memory type | Whether the CPU and motherboard support the specific type of DDR5 module, including ECC or registered/buffered memory where relevant; do not assume all DDR5 modules are interchangeable. |
Do not decide by speed label alone. A lower-rated kit listed for your exact configuration may be a more straightforward choice than a faster kit whose profile and module count are not validated for the platform.

Troubleshoot boot or stability problems
- Power down and check installation. Reseat the modules and confirm they are in the slots specified by the motherboard manual.
- Return memory settings to defaults. If you enabled XMP or EXPO, disable the profile while troubleshooting and try the system at its default memory settings.
- Check CPU and BIOS support. Revisit the motherboard CPU-support list and verify that the installed BIOS meets the listed requirement for your processor.
- Consult the board maker’s guidance. If the exact kit is QVL-listed but problems persist, ASUS recommends updating the BIOS. Follow the instructions for your specific motherboard model rather than using a generic update procedure.
Motherboard QVLs, support lists, and BIOS releases change. Check the live support page for your exact model and revision when buying or troubleshooting; the official ASUS QVL guidance describes the vendor’s list and support process.
