There is no universal winner. In the specific RTINGS comparison of the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 and Blueair Blue Signature Small, the Blueair delivered more particle-cleaning airflow, including at a noise-limited setting; the Dyson’s distinguishing advantage was that it also works as a fan. If you want a standalone purifier, compare the exact model’s clean-air delivery, room-size guidance, noise, and filter costs. Choose a Dyson purifier when its fan or other model-specific features matter enough to you to justify the trade-offs.

How do the Dyson and Blueair compare in a direct test?

The clearest like-for-like evidence here is RTINGS’ comparison of two specific products: the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 and the Blueair Blue Signature Small. RTINGS measured PM1.0 clean-air delivery at maximum fan speed and at a sound level of 45 dBA or less. Its reported results were:

Measure Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 Blueair Blue Signature Small
PM1.0 CADR at maximum fan speed 128 m³/hour 290 m³/hour
PM1.0 CADR at or below 45 dBA 82 m³/hour 170 m³/hour
RTINGS recommended room size at maximum 11.0 m² 24.7 m²

These are RTINGS’ measurements and recommendations for those variants, not a brand-wide verdict. In that comparison, RTINGS judged the Blueair stronger for particle filtration and quieter. It identified the Dyson’s fan function and remote control as advantages. The Blueair’s ionization feature cannot be disabled, which may matter to buyers who want to avoid ionization. See RTINGS’ model comparison.

Guide and market Named picks What the guide establishes
TechRadar, 2026 Blueair Blue Pure 411i Max (called Blueair Blue Max 3250i in the UK); Coway Airmega 100 Blueair is its pick for most people; Coway is its budget choice. It lists 240 m³/h CADR for the Airmega 100 and specifies a pre-filter, True HEPA, and deodorization filter.
The Independent, 2026; UK-oriented Dyson HushJet Compact; Coway Airmega 50; Coway Airmega 350; Blueair Blue Mini Max Its picks are, respectively, overall, budget, large-room, and small-room. Its UK-oriented availability and pricing do not automatically apply elsewhere.

The Independent reports that its reviewer’s candle-smoke test of the Dyson HushJet Compact reduced PM0.3 and PM2.5 by around 75% after 15 minutes, with levels close to undetectable after 30 minutes. That is a publisher-reported test, not a lab-certified result or a direct comparison against the Blueair or Coway models. Read The Independent’s guide. TechRadar’s picks and Airmega 100 specification are in its 2026 air-purifier guide.

Tom’s Guide reports that a particularly demanding test of the Dyson Find+Follow Purifier Cool PC3 took half an hour to move air-quality readings from severe to good. The account does not provide a controlled equivalent head-to-head measurement, so it should not be treated as a ranking against other models. Read the PC3 review.

How should you match a purifier to your room?

Do not choose on a maximum room-area claim alone. Check the model’s recommended room size and the cleaning rate or air changes behind that recommendation, then consider whether you will actually use the setting that produces the stated performance. A model’s maximum setting may clean faster but be too loud for the way you plan to use it.

  • For a small room or bedroom: prioritize adequate delivery at a sound level you can tolerate during sleep or work. The RTINGS results show why a noise-limited measurement can be useful: at or below 45 dBA, the tested Blueair delivered 170 m³/hour versus 82 m³/hour for the tested Dyson.
  • For a larger room: check the recommended area and air changes per hour for the exact model. A guide’s large-room pick, such as the Coway Airmega 350 named by The Independent, is an editorial selection rather than a substitute for checking your room and usage.
  • For continuous operation: compare sound, energy use, and the clean-air rate at the setting you are likely to leave on. Blueair’s US comparison page lists practical comparison fields such as room size, energy use, sound, air changes, CADR, sensors, and filter-replacement indicators. Use Blueair’s model comparison for its own products; it does not establish cross-brand superiority.

What does CADR tell you—and what does it leave out?

CADR is a way to compare how quickly a purifier delivers cleaned air under a specified test method. It is useful for comparing particle-cleaning throughput, but read the pollutant, test conditions, speed, and noise alongside the number. A filter’s capture efficiency is not the same as whole-room cleaning speed: airflow, room mixing, and the setting used all matter.

Dyson argues that CADR measures how quickly airborne particle counts fall but does not test filtration quality or distinguish particle sizes, and that particles not captured may return to the room. This is Dyson’s position, not independent evidence that its products outperform a CADR-tested competitor. Its explanation of POLAR describes a whole-room test; Dyson contrasts this with a CADR chamber of 28.5 m³ using one sensor. The testing page is manufacturer-authored and does not independently establish which method is more valid. Dyson’s CADR explanation and Dyson’s testing-method page provide its account.

Do Dyson’s extra functions justify choosing one?

A Dyson purifier may suit someone who wants one appliance to filter air and circulate it as a fan, rather than buying a standalone purifier and separate fan. Depending on the exact model, Dyson also describes app controls, sensors, and automatic responses to indoor air quality. Those conveniences are separate from particle-cleaning performance and should be checked on the product page for the model and market you intend to buy.

Dyson says its purifiers capture 99.95% of particles as small as PM0.1, use a vacuum-sealed HEPA filter, monitor and respond to indoor air quality in auto mode, and project purified air through Air Multiplier technology. These are manufacturer claims; they do not by themselves establish how quickly a particular unit will clean your room. Check Dyson’s model specifications and claims.

Do not assume that features from one Dyson model apply to another. For example, Dyson describes its Big+Quiet as projecting air 32 feet and operating at 56 decibels, and identifies a CO2 sensor specifically on the BP04. Its claim that the BP04 removes three times more NO2 than a previous Dyson carbon filter is qualified by model and testing footnotes on the product page; it is not a general claim for the PC1, PC3, or all Dyson purifiers. Are particle filtration and odor removal the same job?

No. HEPA filtration and particle CADR relate to particles; odor and some gas-removal claims concern other filter media and pollutants. If smoke odor, cooking smells, or gases are a priority, check the exact model’s filter composition and the manufacturer’s stated target pollutants rather than assuming a strong particle result covers them. TechRadar lists a deodorization filter among the Coway Airmega 100’s stages, but that alone does not quantify its removal of any particular gas.

Imperial College London associate professor in environmental fluid mechanics Henry Burridge told The Independent: “If I was buying an air purifier, I would only stick to a filter-based air purifier.” The same passage says he would also look for CADR through the filter system. The Independent’s guide provides the attribution and context.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Confirm the exact model and market. Product names, variants, and availability can differ by country; the Blueair 411i Max, for example, is called the Blue Max 3250i in the UK according to TechRadar.
  2. Match the room and cleaning rate. Check recommended area and air changes, not just the largest advertised room figure.
  3. Compare at a livable noise level. Look for performance at the speed you expect to use. Maximum-speed numbers do not describe quieter operation.
  4. Separate must-have functions from filtration. Decide whether a fan, app, automatic sensing, or display is worth paying for, and verify each feature on the precise model.
  5. Check replacement-filter cost and fit. Confirm the compatible part number, current availability, and recurring cost for your country before purchase. Do not assume filters fit across models or product generations.
  6. Inspect other ongoing costs and constraints. Compare energy use and any feature—such as ionization—that you may want to avoid or control.
