Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To sync handwritten notes, sign in to the same account on compatible devices, connect to the internet, and enable the notebook’s specific sync setting. The exact result depends on the brand: backup, viewing on another device, and editing the same notebook elsewhere are not interchangeable. Kindle Scribe, Kobo, BOOX, and reMarkable each document their own sync paths; none of the workflows below establishes universal cross-brand transfer of editable notebooks.
First, decide what “sync” needs to do
An E Ink notebook can contain a standalone handwritten notebook, handwriting attached to a book or PDF, or an exported file. These may use different sync systems. Before troubleshooting, identify the content and the outcome you want:
- Cloud backup: a copy held by the device maker’s service in case the device is lost or reset.
- Second-device access: opening the notebook on another compatible E Ink reader or tablet.
- Phone or computer access: viewing notes in a companion app or website.
- Continued editing: changing the original notebook on another device and having those changes sync back.
- Portable copy: exporting a PDF, image, or text-based file for storage or use elsewhere.
A vendor’s statement that notes are backed up or accessible on another device does not by itself mean they can be edited in every app, or transferred as an editable native notebook to another brand.
Sync steps by E Ink notebook brand
reMarkable: pair the tablet with its apps
- Sign in to the same reMarkable account on the tablet and the mobile or desktop app.
- Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi. reMarkable says files pair with its cloud and companion apps, and that changes made on any platform sync when connected to Wi-Fi. See reMarkable’s pairing and sync guidance.
- To check a stalled sync, open the tablet’s Cloud setting and choose Check sync, then inspect the app’s file list. reMarkable identifies outdated software and weak, unstable, or incompatible internet as possible causes. Its troubleshooting page says that without Connect, files not opened and synced for more than 50 days stop syncing to mobile and desktop apps; check the current subscription terms for your account. See reMarkable’s sync troubleshooting steps.
For a separate copy, reMarkable documents exporting from desktop as PDF, PNG, or SVG, and uploading files from the tablet to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. Those exports are portable files, not proof that the native notebook remains editable and synchronized in another service. Details are in reMarkable’s pairing and sync guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Kindle Scribe: enable Sync for Scribe notebooks
- Connect the Kindle Scribe to the internet and make sure Sync is turned on.
- Allow it to sync, then check another Kindle Scribe signed in to the relevant account. Amazon says Scribe notebooks are backed up to the cloud when the device is online and Sync is enabled; its documentation scopes access to handwritten annotations across Scribe devices. It does not establish that handwritten notebooks can be edited in every Kindle app or viewed on every Kindle model. See Amazon’s Kindle sync instructions.
- For a shareable copy, use the Scribe sharing workflow to send a download link by email. Amazon says the link is available for seven days. Its searchable PDF option applies to Scribe models released in 2025 or later; this is an export, not evidence of ongoing two-way notebook editing in a phone or desktop app. See Amazon’s Scribe sharing instructions.
Kobo: enable notebook syncing on compatible eReaders
- On the Kobo eReader, go to Home > More > Syncing and updates and select Sync My Notebooks. Automatic syncing can be enabled separately, with a time of day selected.
- Sign in to the same Kobo account on the compatible eReaders and sync them. Kobo says notebook syncing provides access on several eReaders signed in to the same account; the eReader needs stylus support to view notebook files. See Kobo’s notebook backup and sync instructions.
- Check that notebook backup is enabled and sync regularly. Kobo says notebooks are saved on the eReader and Kobo.com by default, but warns that signing out or resetting the eReader can result in lost notebooks and annotations. See Kobo’s notebook guidance.
For a copy outside Kobo’s notebook sync, Kobo supports export to Dropbox or a computer. Advanced notebooks can be exported as Word (.docx), text, HTML, or ZIP; Basic notebooks can be exported as PNG, JPEG, PDF, or ZIP. Kobo also documents USB transfer of .nebo files between certain Kobo eReaders. These options do not establish live notebook editing in a general phone app. See Kobo’s notebook export instructions.
Kobo lists the Sage, Elipsa, Elipsa 2E, and Libra Colour as compatible with Kobo Stylus and Stylus 2. A compatible stylus is for writing on the device; it does not provide sync. See Kobo’s stylus compatibility list.

BOOX: sync Notes through an ONYX account
- Sign in to an ONYX account on each device. Use the same account and server on both.
- In Notes, enable sync for all notes or for the individual notebook you need, then allow automatic sync or trigger a manual sync.
- To view synced notes away from the tablet, use the Send2BOOX website or BOOX Assistant for Android or iOS. See BOOX’s Notes sync instructions.
Handwriting attached to a reading document uses a separate reading-data sync path. BOOX says to use the same account and server and put the same document in the same directory on each device. Its firmware V4.1 documentation adds an option to upload the source document with its reading data, with a 200 MB per-document limit. Because that instruction is firmware-specific, check your device’s current firmware and menus before relying on it. See BOOX’s reading-data sync guidance.

What to check when notes do not appear
- Identify the content type. Decide whether the missing item is a standalone notebook, handwriting on a book or PDF, or an exported file. A device may sync these through separate settings.
- Check connectivity and accounts. Confirm internet access and that each intended device is signed in to the same relevant account. On BOOX, confirm the server as well as the account.
- Verify the right sync control. Check the notebook or reading-data setting for that content. Kobo notebook sync is a distinct checkbox; Kindle Scribe requires Sync; reMarkable provides Cloud > Check sync. BOOX document annotations may also depend on matching file locations.
- Trigger sync and check the destination. If the product offers manual sync, run it, allow time for upload and download, and inspect the companion app or second device.
- Update software and consult the vendor’s troubleshooting guidance. Do not reset or sign out as an early troubleshooting step: Kobo specifically warns that either can result in lost notebooks and annotations.
- Export valuable notes separately. A readable PDF, image, or text file can serve as an independent copy, even when it does not preserve the notebook’s native editability.
