At U.S. launch, the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 both started at $799—but the iPhone 17 included 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 16 started at 128GB. That gives the newer model more storage for the same launch price. It does not prove which is the better buy today: current iPhone 16 prices and offers vary, and the available evidence does not establish October 2026 street prices. Compare current offers for matching storage, condition, carrier status, and warranty before deciding.
How much did the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 cost at launch?
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $799 for the standard iPhone 16 in September 2024 and $799 for the standard iPhone 17 in September 2025. Those are historical launch prices, not current retail quotes.
The iPhone 16 Plus is a separate, larger model that started at $899 at its 2024 launch. That price should not be mistaken for the standard iPhone 16’s starting price.
| Model | U.S. launch starting price | Listed storage options | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 | $799 (Apple, September 2024) | 128GB, 256GB, 512GB | The entry model has half the storage of the iPhone 17 entry model. |
| iPhone 17 | $799 (Apple, September 2025) | 256GB, 512GB | At the same U.S. launch starting price, it includes an additional 128GB compared with the iPhone 16 base model. |
Apple’s launch figures make the iPhone 17 look stronger on storage per launch dollar. They do not show how much either phone costs now, whether a particular seller has stock, or how much a trade-in or carrier promotion would reduce the bill. No current street-price survey or promotion value is established here.

How to compare what you would actually pay
For a fair current-price comparison, use two offers with the same storage capacity where possible. If you compare an iPhone 16 with 128GB against an iPhone 17 with 256GB, account for the extra storage rather than treating them as equivalent configurations.
- Choose the same buying conditions. Match the seller, phone condition, unlocked or carrier-locked status, and warranty coverage.
- Compare the out-the-door price. Include applicable taxes and fees, and distinguish an upfront discount from bill credits spread across a carrier contract.
- Read offer eligibility. Trade-in values, plan requirements, and carrier promotions depend on the buyer and offer terms; do not assume an advertised maximum applies to you.
- Decide how much storage you need. Compare the same capacity when available, or decide whether the iPhone 17’s 256GB base capacity is worth paying more for than a discounted 128GB iPhone 16.
This approach answers “at what cost?” more usefully than comparing old launch prices: the relevant figure is the current price for the specific configuration and terms you can actually buy.

What does the iPhone 17 add over the iPhone 16?
| Area | iPhone 17 | iPhone 16 |

The iPhone 17’s larger, adaptive-refresh display is the most directly apparent difference for everyday use. Whether it matters depends on your priorities: a larger screen and smoother scrolling may be valuable, while someone satisfied with the iPhone 16’s display may not benefit enough to justify paying more.
The camera systems differ in their described hardware and features, but specifications alone do not establish which produces better results in every situation. Choose based on the capabilities you expect to use rather than assuming that a newer model guarantees a particular improvement in image quality.

A19 is a newer chip generation than A18, but no comparative benchmark or quantified speed result is established here. Both phones support Apple Intelligence, so basic compatibility is not, by itself, a reason to choose the iPhone 17. Availability of specific software features can depend on software version, language, and region.

Choose the iPhone 17 if its base storage or display suits you better
- You want at least 256GB and are comparing the 17’s base model with a 128GB iPhone 16.
- You value a 6.3-inch display and ProMotion adaptive refresh up to 120Hz.
- You expect to use the iPhone 17’s listed camera features, including its 48MP Ultra Wide and macro photography.
Choose the iPhone 16 if the current price makes it the better fit
- You can buy it for meaningfully less under comparable conditions and 128GB is enough for your use.
- You prefer its 6.1-inch display or specifically want its Camera Control and Action button.
- You do not need the iPhone 17’s particular display, storage, or camera features.
“Meaningfully less” depends on your budget and how much you value the newer phone’s added capacity and features; no universal savings threshold is established. Consider how long you expect to keep the device as well as the upfront difference, but the available evidence does not establish a comparative battery-life result or a quantified performance advantage.
