Choose an E Ink notebook if handwriting, reading and marking up documents are the main tasks. Choose a general-purpose tablet if you also need a broad range of apps, multitasking or other tablet functions. The best fit depends less on the category name than on your daily workflow—and E Ink notebooks themselves vary in what they can do.
Start with what you need to do
Write down the tasks you expect the device to handle most often: class or meeting notes, journaling, reading and annotating documents, sketching, or using apps alongside your notes. Rank those tasks. A device that handles your most frequent work well is usually a better choice than one with a longer feature list you rarely use.
- Mostly handwriting and document work: An E Ink notebook may suit you if you want a focused space for notes, reading and annotation.
- Notes plus many apps or multitasking: A general-purpose tablet is the more natural category to investigate. Check that your specific apps and stylus work with the model you choose.
- Reading is central: Compare the reading access each device provides. Kindle Scribe combines notebooks with Kindle reading and writing in books; reMarkable’s reading and document workflow is different.
Focus is a product choice, not a universal advantage: reMarkable says its devices have no app store or web browser by design. That can help keep the device centered on writing, but it is a poor fit if you need those functions on the same screen. reMarkable’s overview
Compare the workflows, not just the screens
| What to compare | E Ink notebook | General-purpose tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Primary work | Often focused on handwriting, document review and reading; tools vary by model. | Handwriting alongside broader tablet functions; software and stylus support vary by model. |
| Reading | Reading access depends on the device. Kindle Scribe supports Kindle reading and writing in books; reMarkable has a different document workflow. | Reading apps may be available, depending on the operating system and app support. |
| Writing and markup | Compare the model’s writing tools, color support and how annotations work with documents. | Requires a compatible stylus and note-taking app; check both for the exact tablet. |
| Software and distractions | Some models limit apps and browsing; sync, conversion and subscription features also vary. | Often the better category to consider for app breadth and multitasking, but verify the apps you need. |
| Total cost | Account for the device, pen, cover, replacement tips and any subscription. | Account for the tablet, compatible stylus, cover and any paid note-taking software. |
This is a decision framework, not a claim that every tablet or E Ink device has the same capabilities. For example, Apple lists Pencil compatibility by iPad model, so check the exact generation before buying a stylus. Apple Pencil compatibility

Kindle Scribe: Kindle reading alongside writing
Amazon describes Kindle Scribe as a device for notebooks, writing in books and documents, and Kindle reading. Its overview lists a 10.2-inch, 300 ppi glare-free screen and an adjustable front light. Amazon distinguishes the original Scribe from the 2024 model, which came with an upgraded Premium Pen; check the listing for the precise model and included accessories rather than assuming they are the same across model years. iPad with Apple Pencil: handwriting within a broader tablet setup
An iPad may be a better starting point if your note-taking is part of a wider app-based workflow. Match the Pencil to your exact iPad generation using Apple’s compatibility chart, then check that your preferred note-taking app supports the features you need. The compatibility information establishes which Pencil works with which iPad; it is not a controlled comparison of iPad and E Ink writing performance. Apple Pencil compatibility

Consider display and lighting as model-specific features
Screen size, resolution and lighting differ even between E Ink notebooks. Amazon lists the Kindle Scribe at 10.2 inches and 300 ppi with an adjustable front light; reMarkable lists Paper Pro at 11.8 inches, 2160 × 1620 pixels and 229 ppi with an adjustable reading light. Treat these as specifications for the named products, not as a ranking of comfort. If display comfort matters to you, compare the actual devices in person where possible; specifications do not establish a medical benefit or predict how comfortable a screen will feel to you.
