No—not based on the comparison that was reported. In August 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported a $4,779.99 price for an Alienware Area-51 with an RTX 5090, then compared that price with the cost of a standalone RTX 5090. Its 17 August report said the desktop was $20 cheaper than the least expensive in-stock card it had found, priced at $4,799 or more. That was a dated comparison with the GPU alone—not the GPU and CPU together—and the promotion has expired.
What the August 2026 Alienware deal actually showed
Tom’s Hardware reported that Dell had reduced the Area-51 price from $6,329.99 to $4,779.99—a $1,550, or 24%, discount. The report’s headline comparison was that the complete desktop cost $20 less than the least expensive in-stock standalone RTX 5090 it had observed, which was priced at least $4,799 at the time. That is a comparison with one graphics card, not evidence that the PC cost less than buying both its GPU and processor separately. Tom’s Hardware’s 17 August 2026 deal report
The distinction matters because an earlier Tom’s Hardware article, dated 7 August 2026, cited a standalone RTX 5090 listing at $4,399.99. Against that card price, the same $4,779.99 desktop cost $380 more. The two observations, only ten days apart, show how strongly the comparison depended on the date and retailer listing; neither establishes today’s GPU price. Tom’s Hardware’s 7 August 2026 report
What came with the reported $4,779.99 configuration
Tom’s Hardware described the discounted system as an Intel-based Area-51 with a 20-core Core Ultra 7 265K and an RTX 5090. Its report listed 32GB of DDR5-7200 memory, a 1TB Gen 5 SSD, a 1500W power supply, Windows 11, and a 240mm AIO cooler. These are the specifications reported for that historical deal, not a guarantee that the same configuration is currently available.

The report also cited Tom’s Hardware testing that found a 7% gaming-performance uplift from DDR5-7200 with Intel 200S boost. Separately, its CPU test setup paired the Core Ultra 7 265K with an RTX 5090 and averaged 150 fps at 1080p across 17 games. Those are publisher-reported test findings, not results for every game or a benchmark of the desktop as a whole. Tom’s Hardware’s 17 August 2026 deal report
Other coverage did not describe every specification identically. 9to5Toys, for example, listed DDR5-6400 and a 1500W Gold-rated power supply, and marked the deal expired. Avoid treating those details as interchangeable with Tom’s Hardware’s DDR5-7200 listing or assuming either write-up describes a configuration still for sale. 9to5Toys’ 5 August 2026 report

A GPU-only comparison cannot answer whether a prebuilt PC beats buying its processor and graphics card separately. To make that judgment, compare prices for the exact parts and the complete system at the same time, then account for the rest of the build.

- Match the parts: Check the exact RTX 5090 model and processor, rather than comparing a desktop with an unrelated or unavailable card listing.
- Use current prices: The $4,399.99 and $4,799-or-more card prices were observations in August 2026, not current benchmarks.
- Count the whole build: Include memory, SSD, power supply, cooling, case, Windows, assembly, and warranty or support when estimating a comparable DIY total.
- Compare the configuration: Check memory capacity and speed, storage capacity, PSU rating, cooler, and upgrade options—not just the CPU and GPU names.
- Check the final checkout price: Confirm the current configuration, availability, shipping, taxes, and any applicable discount on the seller’s page.
The sources do not establish a current like-for-like standalone price for both the CPU and RTX 5090. Without that pair of prices and a comparable cost for the other components and services, it is not possible to conclude that buying this system is cheaper than building one.
