No. Based on Rockstar’s published GTA VI story and character information, you can start with GTA 6 without first playing an earlier Grand Theft Auto game. Rockstar has not said that prior games are required. That is a conclusion from the material it has released, not a guarantee that GTA 6 will contain no callbacks, returning characters, or references.
What you need to know about GTA 6’s story
Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a story about Jason and Lucia, whose attempt at an easy score goes wrong and draws them into a criminal conspiracy spanning Leonida. The published synopsis and character profiles do not direct players to any earlier game for essential plot context.
Lucia’s profile mentions her mother’s dreams from their time in Liberty City. That detail supplies background about Lucia; Rockstar does not present it as a reason to play GTA III or GTA IV. Nothing in the published material establishes that you must know the older games’ stories to follow Jason and Lucia.
Should you play GTA 5 first?
Only if you want to. GTA V Story Mode is a reasonable optional refresher for someone who wants to revisit the series’ recent setting and tone, but Rockstar has not identified it as preparation for a required GTA 6 plot point. You do not need to replay GTA V—or finish GTA Online—to meet any prerequisite stated in the published GTA 6 material.

- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Rockstar Support treats Story Mode as a distinct part of GTA V and explains how it relates to GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That access information is platform-specific; check the current store listing and your platform before buying or downloading. It does not establish identical access arrangements on other systems. What about older GTA games and continuity?
Rockstar has not published a play-order requirement for GTA 6. It also has not guaranteed that the game will avoid references or familiar characters, so it would be too strong to promise that earlier games will have no relevance at all. A callback can add context for longtime fans without making an older game essential to understand the new story.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
Rockstar’s 2009 FAQ provides a limited example of how the series has handled related stories: when asked whether players needed The Lost and Damned before The Ballad of Gay Tony, Rockstar replied, “No. While it’s great to have knowledge of Episode 1’s story to get the most out of the revelations in Episode 2, it’s not essential. You can download and play The Ballad of Gay Tony on its own.” That answer concerns two GTA IV episodes, not GTA 6, and does not settle how GTA 6 will handle continuity. Pick your starting point
| What you want | What to do |
|---|---|
| Play GTA 6’s announced story | Start with GTA 6; no earlier game is identified as a prerequisite in Rockstar’s published materials. |
| Revisit the recent series | Play GTA V Story Mode if it is available on your platform and you want the experience. Treat it as optional, not required preparation. |
| Understand every possible callback | There is no confirmed checklist or complete play order for that goal. Playing earlier games may provide extra context, but Rockstar has not said which, if any, are necessary for GTA 6. |
