Back up your Pixel and verify what is saved before trying any troubleshooting step that could erase data—especially a factory reset. Start at Settings > Google services > Backup, review Backup details, and tap Back up now if needed. Then check photos, contacts, files, and important app data separately; they may not all be included in the device backup.
Check your Pixel’s backup settings
- Connect the phone and check its battery. Make sure it has an internet connection and enough charge to complete the backup.
- Open the backup screen. Go to Settings > Google services > Backup. Names and locations can differ by Android version; if you do not see the path, search Settings for “Backup.”
- Confirm the Google Account. Check that the account shown is the one where you expect the backup to be stored.
- Review Backup details. Inspect the categories selected for this Pixel rather than assuming everything is covered. Tap Back up now if you need to start a backup manually.
Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. Check the backup screen again and wait until the relevant categories show as saved or backed up before relying on them.
Check data that may be stored separately
A device backup and content synced through Google services are not the same thing. Verify each important destination directly:
- Photos and videos: Open Google Photos and confirm the items you need have finished syncing.
- Contacts: Check Google Contacts and confirm the important contacts appear in the account you intend to use.
- Files: Check Google Drive for files you need to keep. Files stored only on the phone may not be there.
- App-specific information: Check the app’s own backup or account settings for anything critical, such as notes, authenticator access, or locally stored projects.
Android device backups commonly include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Some features, such as RCS messages, call settings, or blocked numbers, can depend on the relevant Google app. Google cautions that not every app can back up or restore all of its settings and data, so a category appearing in device backup is not a guarantee that every app’s contents will return.

If the backup does not start or finish
- Check that the Pixel is online and has sufficient battery, then try again.
- Return to Backup details to see whether the backup is still in progress or whether a category needs attention.
- If the issue appears related to Google One or account storage, check the Google One app and its storage status.
- For important photos or files that have not synced, upload them manually to the appropriate Google service before proceeding.
Do not treat an unfinished backup as proof that your data is safe. Confirm the items you care about are available in their destination accounts or apps.
Troubleshoot the update before considering a reset
Once your important data is protected, start with less destructive steps suited to the problem. Google’s general Pixel troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the phone, checking system and app updates, and using Safe Mode where appropriate to identify whether a downloaded app is involved. The exact instructions can vary by Android version and symptom.

To check update status, open Settings > System > Software update and follow the on-screen instructions. Pixel updates roll out gradually and timing depends on the device and carrier; an update may take a few weeks to reach a phone. A missing update is not, by itself, evidence that the backup failed.

A factory data reset removes data from the phone. Google says apps and their associated data are uninstalled; data stored in a Google Account may be restored, but that does not ensure every local file or app detail will return. Do not reset until you have checked Backup details, confirmed separate syncs, and handled app data that matters to you. If anything remains uncertain, pause and consult the relevant app’s backup instructions before proceeding.
