Start with a climate or sustainability question students notice at school or in their community—not with an AI-generated solution. Students should investigate the issue, choose an achievable action, involve the people affected, and decide how they will measure and reflect on the result. AI can help with bounded planning tasks, but its claims need checking and its use must follow school rules.

1. Start with a local question students care about

Invite students to identify an issue they see, then turn it into a question that can be investigated. A campus issue—such as food waste, energy use, or a lack of shade—may be manageable because students can speak with people who understand the school’s facilities and routines. The first aim is to understand the problem, not to commit prematurely to a solution.

  • What do students notice, and where or when does it happen?
  • Who else experiences or manages the issue?
  • What information could help establish whether it is a real, local concern?

For a campus project, consult the principal and relevant teachers, custodians, support staff, or other affected people before proposing changes. UNESCO’s school climate-action guide emphasizes that projects should grow from students’ ideas and help them develop the skills and resolve to act.

2. Learn the science and the local context

Before selecting an intervention, students need enough subject knowledge to distinguish a climate issue from a related but different sustainability concern, and to understand what evidence would support a proposed response. Pair climate and energy learning with local information: observations, school records where available, and conversations with people familiar with the setting.

Planning is also a chance to practice listening, empathy, consensus building, and advocacy. NOAA’s Climate Action Learning Process connects climate and energy education with action skills and reassessment of the learning process.

3. Use AI for bounded tasks, not as the authority

AI is optional. If school policy permits an approved tool, students can use it to generate search terms, organize interview questions, or help structure a comparison of possible actions. These are support tasks; the students still need to decide what matters locally and whether a suggestion is sound.

  • Consider whether an AI output overlooks groups, languages, abilities, or circumstances relevant to the project.
  • Consider the environmental impacts of AI use, and keep it proportionate to the task.

UNESCO’s AI competency framework for students calls for rigorous public validation of educational AI tools to guard against bias and encourages inquiry into AI’s environmental impacts. It does not establish that any particular AI service is approved for a school.

4. Compare a few feasible project ideas

Have students generate several options and compare them before choosing. The criteria below are a planning aid, not a universal scoring formula. Students and educators can agree on which factors matter most in their circumstances; UNESCO’s curriculum guidance emphasizes climate learning that is action-oriented, relevant, comprehensive, quality-focused, and supportive of justice.

Consider Questions to ask
Local relevance and evidence Does the idea address the issue students identified? What evidence supports it, and what could students collect themselves?
Ownership and inclusion Are students choosing and shaping the action? Who benefits, who might be burdened, and whose perspective is missing?
Feasibility and permission Can students do it within the available time and resources? Does it affect facilities, routines, or grounds that require approval?
Likely effect and measurement What change is plausible, and what indicator could show whether it happened? What claims would the evidence not support?

For example, possible school projects include a waste audit, an energy audit, a garden or composting effort, or a campaign developed with the school community. UNESCO describes student assessments such as waste and energy audits and notes roles for students, teachers, building operators, cafeteria staff, families, and local organizations. Suitability depends on local facilities, adult support, and permissions. Its 2024 curriculum guidance offers principles for climate learning, not a ranking of these project ideas.

5. Choose one student-owned action and make a plan

Once students have investigated and compared options, they should select the project and make the practical decisions with an adult contact available to help navigate safety and permissions. Student leadership means more than carrying out an adult-selected task: students should shape the issue, the action, and how they will learn from it.

  1. Define the action: State what students will do and what problem it addresses.
  2. Divide the work: Assign roles for coordination, outreach, evidence collection, implementation, and communicating results, as appropriate to the project.
  3. Set a time frame: Choose realistic milestones and a date to review progress.
  4. Identify an adult contact: Agree who can answer questions about school procedures and connect students with relevant staff.
  5. Agree on evidence: Decide what to record before, during, and after the action, and what conclusions those records can reasonably support.

UNESCO’s school guide describes learning through action as students selecting, planning, and implementing projects that come from their ideas, followed by reflection on achievements, lessons, and what they would change.

This collaboration is not a substitute for student choice; it helps students make a workable plan and understand its effects. UNESCO’s Green School Quality Standard connects climate and sustainability work across school governance, facilities and operations, teaching and learning, and community engagement.

7. Implement, measure, and reflect honestly

Record a baseline where possible, then track what students actually do and what changes. Report the result with its limits. A project can show learning, participation, or an operational change without proving that it reduced emissions. Do not claim emissions reductions unless the project has suitable data to support that conclusion; the sources cited here provide no general expected reduction, cost, or success rate for an individual student project.

  • What did students complete, and who participated?
  • What changed compared with the baseline, if a baseline was available?
  • Who was included in the work or benefited, and whose needs were missed?
  • What did not work as planned, and what would students change next time?

Use the answers to decide whether to continue, adapt, or conclude the project. NOAA’s Climate Action Learning Process treats action planning as a learning cycle that includes reevaluation.

What a school-level project can—and cannot—show

UNESCO reported that nearly 112,000 schools in 98 countries had become Green Schools since the guidance was published, in an explainer published on 20 April 2026 and updated on 3 June 2026. That figure provides program context; it is not evidence of the impact or likely success of a particular student project. A project’s results need to be established through its own local evidence.
