Sky involves an ongoing package cost, while Freesat has no monthly satellite-TV bill but requires a receiver and a working dish. Compare the channels and features you actually use, plus any upfront equipment work, rather than treating their headline channel counts as equivalent.

Channel counts do not show whether one service has the specific channels you watch. Check the package or service listings for those channels and apps before deciding.
How much does Sky Q cost per month?
Sky’s package comparison advertises Essential TV from £15 per month and Ultimate TV from £24 per month for new customers on a 24-month minimum term. These are advertised package offers, not a universal price for Sky Q or a guarantee of every customer’s bill. Sky also displays different rolling and standard rates. See Sky’s current TV package comparison for offer terms and current pricing.
Packages and add-ons change the bill
The channels included depend on the package you choose. Sky Sports is an add-on with extra price and term requirements; the cost depends on the current offer and customer eligibility. Check the applicable terms for the package and any add-ons you want rather than assuming the advertised entry price covers them. See Sky Sports for current information.

What does Freesat cost?
Freesat does not charge a monthly satellite-TV subscription, but the receiver has an upfront price. Freesat lists its Recordable 4K TV Box at £229.99 RRP and its non-recordable 4K box at £99 RRP. These are the listed recommended retail prices on the product pages, not estimates of any dish installation or upgrade. Check Freesat’s Recordable 4K TV Box listing and its non-recordable 4K TV Box listing for product details.
A household’s total cost can therefore include the box, dish or LNB work if the existing installation is unsuitable, and any separate streaming subscriptions. Netflix and other optional services are not included in the free satellite-TV service.

Does Freesat use a Sky dish?
It may: Freesat says an existing Sky dish can work with its receiver. Compatibility depends on the actual dish, cabling and LNB, so check the installation before buying rather than assuming every Sky setup is ready to use. Freesat’s dish guidance explains the existing-dish question.
Can Freesat record programmes?
Yes. The Freesat Recordable 4K TV Box records programmes and supports pausing and rewinding live TV. Freesat states that recording four programmes simultaneously requires a wideband LNB; other dish and LNB arrangements may support fewer simultaneous recordings. Check the receiver and installation requirements on the recordable box product page.

Which service should you choose?
Choose Sky Q if you want paid Sky channels
- You want Sky-branded channels or package bundles that are not part of the free-to-air service you plan to use.
- You are comfortable with a recurring package bill and have checked the price, contract term and add-ons that apply to you.
- You want Sky’s included apps or bundled content, subject to the package and broadband needs.
Choose Freesat if free-to-air channels are enough
- You want to avoid a monthly satellite-TV subscription and are happy to pay upfront for a receiver.
- Your preferred channels are available free-to-air, and a working dish and suitable cabling are already in place or affordable to arrange.
- You want local recording and can confirm that your LNB supports the number of simultaneous recordings you need.
Before switching, make a short list of the channels, apps, recording features and number of simultaneous recordings your household uses. Then compare the Sky package and term against Freesat’s receiver price plus any installation work. That gives a more useful comparison than either service’s headline channel count.
