There is no reason to change everything: NVIDIA’s documentation explains the controls but does not say that every update resets personal settings. Keep settings that work unless you are fixing a specific issue or adapting to a new TV or audio setup.
1. Check the installed software version
On the Shield TV, open Settings > Device Preferences > About and check the software version. Compare it with NVIDIA’s SHIELD software release notes. The release page currently lists SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2.4, with security patches updated to January 2026; releases and patch levels can change, so use the page to confirm what is current.
To check for an available update, go to Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade. NVIDIA also documents automatic upgrades. Menu names can vary by Shield model or software generation, so follow the labels shown on your device. NVIDIA’s release notes list fixes in 9.2.4 for Disney+ playback, third-party remote connections and a settings-page crash when triggering NVIDIA Share; they do not indicate that user preferences are routinely reset.
2. Match display resolution and HDR to the TV
Open Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound and check the available display modes. Select a resolution and HDR mode supported by the television and the HDMI connection. NVIDIA says HDR10-capable displays are detected automatically, while a Dolby Vision-compatible mode may need to be selected. Dolby Vision requires support from the display and the HDMI path.

If a supported mode is missing, check the TV setup before changing Shield settings or replacing equipment:
- Confirm the TV supports the resolution and HDR format you want to use.
- Connect the Shield to a TV HDMI input that supports that format.
- Check whether the TV requires an enhanced, UHD or similar input mode to be enabled for that specific HDMI port.
- For 4K viewing, NVIDIA specifies a 4K display with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support.
NVIDIA notes that an HDMI cable can prevent Dolby Vision from being enabled and suggests trying a higher-quality cable if the compatibility and input checks do not resolve the issue. Consider a Premium High Speed HDMI cable only in that troubleshooting situation; a cable purchase is not a routine post-update step.

3. Review AI upscaling based on the content you watch
In the display settings, review the upscaling option and choose the level that looks best to you. NVIDIA’s guide describes Enhanced upscaling as enabled by default on the setup it covers, with AI-Enhanced and a demo comparison available. The demo can help you judge the effect on your own screen rather than assuming AI processing is always preferable.
AI upscaling does not apply to every video. NVIDIA says AI-Enhanced falls back to Enhanced for video below 480p, frame rates above 30 Hz, or RGB color space. Keep that limitation in mind if the option appears not to affect a particular stream or file.

4. Change frame-rate behavior only to address a playback problem
NVIDIA describes Match frame rate as experimental. It is not supported by every app, and some TVs may have difficulty with it. Try it when you are troubleshooting a specific playback issue, rather than changing the Shield’s overall display refresh rate by default.
NVIDIA warns that choosing a refresh rate other than 60 Hz can slow the Android TV home page, games and 60 Hz video. Weigh any improvement for the app or content you are troubleshooting against that possible effect on everyday use.

5. Check audio settings when sound is delayed or routed incorrectly
Review the audio output path only if you have a symptom, such as sound going to the wrong device or audio arriving out of sync. Match the Shield’s output to the connected TV or receiver, and check the formats supported by the equipment in that chain. Available options depend on the connected devices.
If dialogue or other audio is noticeably ahead of or behind the picture, use the audio/video sync adjustment documented in NVIDIA’s SHIELD support guide. Night Listening Mode appears among the features in the 9.1 release notes, but that does not make it a required setting to change after a later update.

Which settings should you leave alone?
Do not perform a blanket settings reset or alter a working setup just because the Shield installed an update. NVIDIA’s notes for earlier releases describe changes such as a redesigned settings menu, content color-space matching, 720p refresh-rate switching for supported apps, Bluetooth accessory controls and a USB power-off option for sleep. Those historical release details are not recommendations for every owner to change those settings now.
