Beagle 2 was a stationary UK-built science lander carried by ESA’s Mars Express, expected to land in 2003. It never communicated or returned planned science data—but later orbital images indicate that it reached the surface and partially deployed.
How were the missions different?
Pathfinder was designed to demonstrate a relatively low-cost way to deliver both a lander and a mobile rover to Mars. Beagle 2, by contrast, was a compact, stationary lander intended to conduct surface science. It traveled to Mars aboard ESA’s Mars Express; it was not a rover and was not the Mars Express orbiter itself.

How did each lander reach and operate on the surface?
Pathfinder: airbags, then a rover ramp
Pathfinder slowed its descent with a parachute and used airbags to cushion impact. It bounced several times before coming to rest. The lander then deployed Sojourner down a ramp, giving the mission a mobile instrument platform to examine nearby terrain as well as a stationary lander platform.
NASA describes the mission as demonstrating a new way to land safely on Mars and deliver the planet’s first robotic rover. Sojourner operated for 83 days, compared with a planned seven-day mission. NASA Science NASA JPL

Beagle 2: compact, stationary science station
Beagle 2 was designed to unfold after landing and use a robotic arm to bring samples and material to its Payload Adjustable Workbench. Its planned instruments were intended to investigate the surface and atmosphere, but the sequence beyond touchdown was not confirmed by any communication from the lander.
Images from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, reported by NASA JPL in 2015, showed objects identified as Beagle 2 hardware in a partially deployed configuration. The observed targets were about three miles (five kilometers) from the center of the expected landing area. That evidence supports a touchdown and partial deployment; it does not show that the lander completed deployment, operated successfully or carried out its experiments. NASA JPL

What science and data did Pathfinder return?
Pathfinder’s lander and rover sent back both scientific observations and engineering information. NASA Science reports 2.3 billion bits returned, more than 16,500 lander images, 550 rover images and more than 15 chemical analyses. NASA Science
A 2000 NASA Technical Reports Server summary gives a more specific count of 16 chemical analyses and adds 8.5 million temperature, pressure and wind measurements, alongside 2.3 Gbits of data and the same image totals. Beagle 2 returned no science measurements because it never established communication after its expected landing. Its instruments and experiments therefore remain a plan, not a set of Mars results.
Why did Beagle 2 fail—and did it land?
Beagle 2’s mission failed in the sense that it did not communicate and could not return its planned science. The available evidence does not establish the precise cause of the communications failure. The later orbital images changed the answer to a different question: rather than showing that Beagle 2 never reached Mars, they indicate that hardware apparently came to rest on the surface and that some solar-array deployment occurred.

NASA JPL reported that planetary geologist Tim Parker was convinced the imaged objects were Beagle 2 hardware. Mission manager Mark Sims said the images showed the mission had come close to achieving its science goal. Those assessments concern identification and the apparent configuration in the images; they do not establish what prevented communication. NASA JPL

Pathfinder established a delivery approach and rover operations
Pathfinder demonstrated airbag-assisted landing and delivery of a rover to Mars. Sojourner’s design and approach informed later NASA rover missions, according to NASA JPL. Its science return included a large body of images, chemical analyses and meteorological observations. NASA JPL NASA Science

Beagle 2 left a more limited record
Beagle 2 did not demonstrate its planned science operations because it never communicated. Its eventual identification in orbital imagery did, however, clarify that the lander apparently reached the Martian surface and partially deployed, rather than simply disappearing before arrival. NASA JPL
