Java’s feature releases arrive every six months, in March and September. Oracle currently identifies JDK 27 as the latest release and JDK 25 as its latest Long-Term Support (LTS) release, as of October 7, 2026. The key distinction: LTS is a vendor’s support policy for a selected release, not a promise that every JDK distributor will maintain that version on Oracle’s schedule.
How Java’s six-month release cadence works
Java’s feature releases follow a predictable six-month rhythm. Oracle describes two feature updates per year, with releases in March and September. Each feature release can bring platform changes; choosing a release strategy means balancing access to changes sooner against the effort of upgrading more often.
Oracle describes non-LTS releases as cumulative implementation enhancements of the latest LTS release. When a newer feature release arrives, the previous non-LTS release is considered superseded for Oracle Premier Support purposes. Oracle’s FAQ describes a planned six-month support life for non-LTS releases.
What LTS means—and what it does not
Long-Term Support (LTS) is a designation in a vendor’s release and support policy for versions intended to have a longer planned support horizon. Oracle currently lists Java SE 8, 11, 17, 21, and 25 as LTS releases. Oracle’s roadmap currently plans Java 29 for September 2027 as the next LTS, but both the future date and designation are subject to change.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
LTS does not create one universal end-of-support date for Java. A support window depends on the JDK distributor, release, support level, and the customer’s entitlement. Oracle’s dates below describe Oracle’s commercial support policy for eligible Oracle customers; other JDK vendors publish their own roadmaps and terms.
Oracle’s current release picture and support examples
As of October 7, 2026, Oracle’s downloads page identifies JDK 27 as the latest Java SE release and JDK 25 as the latest LTS release. Oracle plans JDK 27 updates under its No-Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC) through March 2027, when JDK 28 is expected to supersede it. Oracle’s support roadmap lists JDK 27 general availability in September 2026 and its Premier Support endpoint in March 2027. These are Oracle’s published plans, not guarantees for every distribution.

Support timelines are separate from licensing
A support date tells you how long a provider plans to offer a particular level of maintenance or assistance. A license tells you what you may do with a particular build. Do not infer licensing rights from a support date, or apply Oracle’s licensing terms to another vendor’s JDK.

Oracle says Oracle OpenJDK releases use GPLv2 with the Classpath Exception (GPLv2+CPE). Oracle JDK 21 and later use NFTC during stated free-use windows. Oracle’s downloads page says JDK 27 binaries are free to use in production and redistribute under NFTC, and that JDK 25 updates are planned under NFTC through September 2028, with subsequent updates under the Java SE Oracle Technology Network (OTN) License. The exact distributor, build, license version, use, and date matter.
In a September 2026 post, Oracle said JDK 21 updates through September 2026 are under NFTC and updates beginning with the October 2026 Critical Patch Update are planned under OTN. Oracle identifies its Java SE Universal Subscription as one commercial support option for organizations seeking continued Oracle JDK 21 updates, with commercial support available through at least September 2031 for subscription customers. Check Oracle’s current terms before making a licensing or procurement decision.

How to choose a release for a project
- Decide how often you want to adopt changes. Following successive feature releases can bring platform changes sooner, but means planning upgrades more frequently. Moving between LTS releases may better fit a team that prefers a longer planned support horizon.
- Check the specific distributor’s roadmap. Confirm its update dates and support levels for the exact JDK version. Oracle’s LTS labels and dates do not establish another provider’s lifecycle.
- Match the support level to your needs. Determine whether community updates are sufficient or whether your organization needs vendor assistance or a commercial support entitlement.
- Verify the deployed build and license. Record the JDK distributor and exact update build, then check the terms that apply to that build and your use case.
For Oracle JDK, the roadmap distinguishes Premier, Extended, and Sustaining Support. For a multi-vendor environment, compare each distributor’s own lifecycle and licensing documentation rather than transferring Oracle’s dates to the portfolio.
