Install an early-access (EA) JDK in its own directory and select it only for the terminal session or project where you need to test it. That keeps your existing JDK as the normal default and makes the change easy to undo. Verify the downloaded file and confirm both java and javac use the intended build before testing. EA builds are for testing upcoming changes, not production use.
Choose an installation method that preserves your current JDK
The most reversible setup is a separate archive installation: download an EA build from the JDK project or distributor, verify it, and extract it to a new directory. A package installer may integrate with system-wide Java selection or replace an existing installation, so its behavior depends on the vendor, operating system, and package type.
Oracle documents archive installation into a writable location on Linux, and selecting among multiple JDKs on macOS. Oracle’s Windows JDK 24 installer guide describes a limitation for installing multiple versions of the same feature release with that installer; this should not be generalized to other vendors or archive installs. Follow the instructions for the specific distributor and platform, and never extract over an active JDK directory.
Record your current Java selection
Before changing anything, note what the terminal currently uses. These commands are a diagnostic starting point; executable-resolution commands differ by shell and operating system.

javac -version
command -v java
Also inspect JAVA_HOME if it is set. On common Unix shells, use echo "$JAVA_HOME"; on Windows, use the equivalent command for your shell. Keeping this baseline makes it easier to tell whether a test command changed only your session or affected a wider environment.
Download and verify the EA build

Open the official EA page for the JDK project or distributor you have chosen. Check that the offered build supports your operating system and processor architecture, and note its exact version or build identifier. EA artifacts and availability change over time.

Download the archive and its published verification data when available. Eclipse Adoptium says it provides SHA-256 checksums and GPG signatures; follow its archive installation guidance for the artifact you select. Compare the checksum or verify the signature using the distributor’s instructions.

Extract the archive into a new, clearly named directory, for example
~/jdks/jdk-ea-<build>on a Unix-like system. Do not reuse the current JDK’s directory or extract over an existing installation. A checksum or signature check helps establish that the file matches the publisher’s reference; it does not make an EA build suitable for production.
Select the EA JDK only where you need it
One command
For a one-off check, invoke the executable by its full path rather than changing your default. Replace the example path with the actual JDK home and use the appropriate executable path for your platform.

One terminal session
For testing several commands, set JAVA_HOME and prepend its bin directory to PATH in a dedicated Unix-like shell session:
export JAVA_HOME="$HOME/jdks/jdk-ea-<build>"
export PATH="$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH"
java -version
javac -version
This affects the current shell and processes launched from it, not every user or the whole machine. Close that session to return to the usual environment. Shell syntax differs on Windows. On macOS, an archive’s JDK home may be nested under Contents/Home; set JAVA_HOME to that JDK home rather than its parent directory. Oracle also documents selecting a macOS JDK by full path or with /usr/libexec/java_home.
One project
If only one project needs the EA build, configure the project’s launcher or build tool instead of adding permanent machine-wide environment changes. Keep the project configuration tied to the local EA installation and document the exact build identifier so another developer can reproduce the setup.

Confirm the runtime, compiler, and build-tool selection
After selecting the EA JDK, check both the runtime and compiler:
java -version
javac -version
Confirm the output identifies the intended EA build. If results do not match, inspect JAVA_HOME and the executable resolved by the shell; a terminal can otherwise pick up a different installation from the one you intended.
Build tools may select a JDK independently of the shell. Gradle’s toolchains can detect local installations and use them for project compilation and execution. Its current toolchain guide says automatic downloads cover GA releases, not EA versions, so install the EA build yourself and configure Gradle to detect or use that local installation. Return to your normal Java setup
If you used a dedicated shell, close it or restore the environment values you recorded. Keep the separate EA directory while you need it; when testing is finished, you can remove that directory if it is no longer needed. Before deleting any shared or package-managed JDK, check whether other applications depend on it.
Use EA builds for testing, not production
Eclipse Adoptium describes EA builds as a way to test changes in the developing codebase and says they are not for production use. Keep a stable JDK available for ordinary work, and make the EA build an explicit, limited choice for compatibility checks or evaluating upcoming changes. The exact build, platform support, and download options depend on the distributor’s current offering; Adoptium’s tagged early-access builds article describes its tagged-build approach, while its EA builds for JDK 21 and later article explains the testing purpose and example acquisition patterns.
