Fed policy can move gold prices, but not by setting them directly—and a rate hike does not automatically push gold down. The key channel is usually the change in expected real yields, alongside movements in the U.S. dollar. Risk, growth expectations and investor momentum can reinforce or outweigh that channel.
How Fed policy reaches gold prices
The Federal Reserve sets monetary policy to pursue maximum employment and price stability. Its policy rate influences other borrowing rates and broader financial conditions, which can affect gold indirectly. The Fed does not set gold’s price. Gold pays no interest. When inflation-adjusted yields on bonds and cash rise, investors may find those assets more attractive relative to gold, increasing gold’s opportunity cost. When real yields fall, that relative disadvantage can ease. This is a tendency, not a fixed price rule.
Why real yields matter more than the policy rate alone
The federal funds target is an overnight policy rate. It is not the same as a longer-term Treasury yield, and neither nominal rate by itself tells you the inflation-adjusted return investors expect. Real yields are more useful for assessing gold’s opportunity cost because they account for inflation expectations.

For a gold-market read, consider the direction of real yields alongside the dollar, risk conditions, growth expectations and investor momentum. A change in the Fed’s target may affect these measures, but the market response depends on how it changes expectations about financial conditions and future returns.
Why expectations can matter as much as the Fed’s decision
Markets respond not only to the rate announced but also to whether it differs from expectations and what it signals about the future policy path. A fully anticipated move may already be reflected in yields and currency prices, leaving little new information for markets to react to. A surprise—or a shift in the expected path—can prompt a larger repricing.

The reason for a rate move also matters. A hike intended to contain inflation may be interpreted differently from one made amid robust growth or financial stress. The World Gold Council notes that the implications for growth, inflation credibility, financial stability and the dollar all shape how a rate increase may affect gold. Why a hike may not make gold fall, and a cut may not make it rise
If a hike lifts expected real yields and strengthens the dollar, those moves can weigh on gold. But gold may hold up or rise if the hike was expected, if real yields do not rise, or if risk and uncertainty increase enough to support demand for gold. A cut can support gold when it lowers real yields or weakens the dollar, but that outcome is not guaranteed either: investors may already have anticipated it, or other forces may dominate.

The practical question is not simply “Did the Fed raise or cut?” It is “What changed in real yields, the dollar and market expectations—and what else is driving investors?”
What recent model estimates say about other drivers
The World Gold Council’s Gold Return Attribution Model groups drivers into economic expansion, risk and uncertainty, opportunity cost, and momentum. In its H1 2026 analysis, opportunity cost had a mixed effect as markets repriced yields and the dollar. The Council attributed the period’s gold-price variability as follows:

- Compare the decision with expectations. Ask whether the target change or accompanying policy signal surprised markets.
- Check real yields. Look at whether inflation-adjusted yields moved up or down after the announcement; the nominal policy rate is only one input.
- Check the U.S. dollar. Because gold is globally priced in dollars, currency movements can affect its relative cost and returns for buyers using other currencies.
- Consider the wider setting. Assess risk and uncertainty, growth expectations, and investor momentum rather than assuming the rate channel explains the whole move.
This is a framework for interpreting market conditions, not a forecast or a guaranteed trade signal.

What reserve valuations do—and do not—show
A Federal Reserve note dated September 2026 reported that world gold reserves at the end of 2025 were valued at $5.1 trillion, or $4 trillion excluding U.S. holdings. It said the rise in valuation since 2024 was largely driven by higher gold prices and private-sector demand, and cautioned that the market-value comparison should not be read as straightforward evidence that gold had surpassed Treasuries as the preferred reserve asset. These are reserve valuation figures, not an estimate of how a rate change affects gold prices. The Federal Reserve’s FEDS Notes archive contains the note.
Is there a current Fed rate to use?
A Federal Reserve report dated July 10, 2026 said the FOMC had maintained a 3.5%–3.75% target range since the start of that year. That dated figure is not established as the rate in effect on October 7, 2026. For the current target, consult the latest FOMC implementation note rather than treating the July report as a live rate quote.
