For a stubborn spot, use a cleaner labeled for suede or nubuck sparingly and only where needed. Let the shoes air-dry away from heat, then brush lightly to lift the nap. Check the shoe maker’s care instructions first, since approach shoes can combine different materials and finishes.
What you need
- A soft suede brush for loose dirt and lifting the nap.
- A suede eraser for dry surface marks.
- If needed, a cleaner specifically labeled for suede or nubuck.
- Optionally, a protector spray labeled for suede or nubuck.
Check your shoe maker’s care guidance before using any liquid or spray. Approach shoes may have mixed-material panels, coatings, membranes or adhesives, and the general suede-care methods below are not verified for every model. Keep products off non-suede areas unless their labels say they are suitable.
How to clean suede approach shoes

Brush off loose dirt while the shoes are dry
Use a soft suede brush with light strokes. Where possible, brush in the natural direction of the nap rather than scrubbing back and forth. Sebago recommends brushing with the nap: Sebago’s suede and nubuck care guide.

Try an eraser on dry marks
Gently work a suede eraser over dry surface marks, then brush away loosened residue. ECCO and Sebago both include an eraser or brush in their suede-cleaning advice: ECCO’s suede shoe-care guide and Sebago’s guide.

Treat stubborn spots with a suitable cleaner
If brushing and erasing are not enough, choose a cleaner labeled for suede or nubuck and follow its directions. Use as little as practical and target the affected area instead of soaking the shoe. Cleaning methods vary: Diemme advises minimal liquid and targeted treatment, while ECCO describes applying cleaner with a damp cloth. Follow your shoe and cleaner instructions rather than treating either method as universal: Diemme’s suede care guide and ECCO’s guide.

Air-dry completely, then lift the nap
Let the shoes dry naturally away from direct heat and heat sources. Once they are fully dry, brush lightly to lift the fibers. Do not brush damp suede or use a heater to speed drying.

Apply protector only if appropriate
A suede- or nubuck-specific protector spray is an optional preventive step. Use it only on dry shoes and follow both the shoe maker’s guidance and the spray label. Manufacturer guidance describes protection against weather or stains; it does not establish that the shoes become waterproof.
What to avoid
- Soaking the shoe: begin with dry brushing and erasing, not an all-over wash.
- Unapproved products on mixed materials: a cleaner intended for suede may not be suitable for other panels or finishes.
- Heat drying: allow the shoes to air-dry naturally.
- Leather cream or polish: Sebago warns that these products can flatten suede’s nap and change its texture.
- Aggressive scrubbing: gentle brushing and targeted treatment are preferable to attacking the fibers. Dr. Martens footwear designer Charlie O’Byrne puts the approach simply: “Be gentle with it. Don’t attack it. Brush it like your favourite pet.” Dr. Martens care guide.
If the nap looks flat after cleaning
Wait until the suede is completely dry, then brush it gently to lift the fibers. Avoid trying to restore the texture with cream or polish; those products can flatten the nap further. If the material remains marked or flattened, stop rather than escalating to an unverified treatment, and consult the shoe maker or a qualified shoe-care professional.
