If your name differs between Aadhaar and PAN, correct the record that is inaccurate so the details match, then try linking again. Use an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for an Aadhaar name update; use Protean or UTIITSL for a PAN name update. If linking still fails after the records match, the Income Tax Department advises biometric authentication at a designated PAN service-provider centre.
Check which details do not match
Compare the full name, date of birth and gender in your Aadhaar and PAN records. UIDAI says these details should match for linking, and specifically advises that date of birth and gender match exactly. A difference may be more than a spelling issue.
UIDAI distinguishes between a minor name mismatch and a completely different name. With a minor mismatch, an Aadhaar OTP may be sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. A completely different name can cause linking to fail and prompt you to correct the name in either the Aadhaar or PAN database. See UIDAI’s PAN-Aadhaar mismatch FAQ.
Choose which record to correct
Correct the record that does not reflect your accurate details, based on the identity information and supporting evidence that establish your correct name. Do not assume Aadhaar is always the record to change: the Income Tax Department says to correct either PAN or Aadhaar so the details match.

For PAN updates, confirm the provider’s current form, evidence requirements, charges and processing information directly; those details can vary and are not specified in the department’s mismatch guidance. The department’s Link Aadhaar FAQ identifies the providers and advises correcting either record.
Correct an Aadhaar name
UIDAI says to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for a minor name correction or a name change. Its online update information describes online demographic updates for address, not name, so do not use an online address-update workflow as a name-correction route.

- Check UIDAI’s current Aadhaar update guidance and the centre’s requirements before visiting.
- Bring supporting identity evidence that establishes the correct name and request the name update at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
- Keep the acknowledgement and check whether the correction has been reflected before trying PAN-Aadhaar linking again.
UIDAI says a name can be updated twice in an Aadhaar holder’s lifetime. If you have already used that limit, consult UIDAI’s current exception process rather than assuming another update will be accepted. UIDAI also says updates are subject to verification, so submitting a request does not guarantee acceptance.
Correct a PAN name
If PAN contains the incorrect name, use Protean or UTIITSL. Confirm the current instructions and evidence checklist through the selected provider’s official channels, submit the correction, and retain the acknowledgement. The available Income Tax Department guidance does not establish an exact PAN document checklist or processing time.

Fees to check before you proceed
UIDAI’s Aadhaar Seva Kendra service page lists ₹75 for a separate demographic update, including a name update, and ₹75 for a document update at a centre. It also lists online document update through myAadhaar as free through 14 June 2027; that is a document-update offer, not an online name-update route. Charges and waiver dates may change, so verify the current fee with UIDAI before attending. Details are on UIDAI’s Aadhaar service charges page.
The Income Tax Department states that a ₹1,000 fee applies to making an inoperative PAN operative by intimating Aadhaar. That is not a PAN name-correction fee. If you seek biometric linking assistance, the department says to bring a copy of the ₹1,000 fee challan; the service-provider centre may charge an additional biometric authentication fee.

Retry linking and escalate if it still fails
- After the corrected name is reflected in the relevant record, try linking PAN and Aadhaar again through the Income Tax Department’s Link Aadhaar service.
- If linking remains unsuccessful, contact a designated centre run by a PAN service provider and ask about biometric-based authentication.
- Before travelling, confirm centre availability and any additional biometric fee with Protean or UTIITSL. The department says to carry your PAN, Aadhaar and a copy of the ₹1,000 fee challan.
