The 2026 Draconid meteor shower is expected to peak on the evening of October 8 into the early hours of October 9. For U.S. viewers, NASA says to start looking around 9 p.m. EDT on October 8. The forecast is for a modest display—not hundreds of meteors per minute: NASA predicts no outburst, and observer guides estimate only a few to about 10 meteors per hour in dark skies.
When is the Draconid meteor shower in 2026?
The Draconids are active from October 6 through October 10, with the predicted maximum at 01:00 UTC on October 9. That is 9 p.m. EDT on October 8, the practical starting time NASA gives for U.S. viewers. The peak is a forecast, not a guaranteed burst at that exact moment.
The International Meteor Organization’s 2026 calendar also lists October 9 at 01:00 UT and gives a predicted ZHR of 5 (?). The question mark signals uncertainty; ZHR is a standardized estimate under ideal conditions, not a promise that an individual observer will count five meteors.
How many Draconids might you see per hour?
Expect a quiet shower in 2026. NASA’s skywatching guide describes the likely view as a few meteors per hour. EarthSky estimates around 10 per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions. Those figures use different framing and are estimates, not guaranteed counts; light pollution, clouds, and your viewing conditions affect what you see.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
- 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
- 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
- GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
- TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
The phrase “hundreds of meteors per minute” describes neither the 2026 prediction nor a normal Draconid rate. NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office predicts no Draconid outburst in 2026. NASA describes an enhanced shower as several hundred meteors per hour and a meteor storm as more than 1,000 per hour—both are general categories, not forecasts for this event.
Why are the Draconids called unpredictable?
Earth encounters streams of dust and debris left by comets, and those particles may be unevenly clumped rather than spread uniformly. The Draconids come from debris associated with comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, which is why the shower is also called the Giacobinids. NASA’s explanation of meteor streams and its parent-body reference table identify the connection to 21P.

- POWERFUL 15X MAGNIFICATION: Giant astronomy binoculars with massive 70mm objective lenses and 20x power. Pair them with any tripod for long-distance land-based viewing or astronomical observation.
- WORKS WITH YOUR TRIPOD: Due to their size & weight, most users mount SkyMaster binoculars on a traditional photo tripod (not included). The built-in ¼”-20 adapter attaches to most tripods in seconds.
- BRIGHT, SHARP VIEWS WITH BaK-4 PRISMS: The SkyMaster is a favorite among those who view in dim conditions near dawn and dusk or at night for astronomy. BaK-4 prisms maximize light throughput to your eye so you see brighter, more detailed images.
- DURABLE AND WATER-RESISTANT: A rubber-armored housing protects your binoculars from damage and provides a secure gripping surface. The water-resistant exterior stands up to tough conditions and unexpected rainy weather.
- UNBEATABLE WARRANTY & CUSTOMER SUPPORT: Buy with confidence from Celestron, a leading optics brand in California since 1960. Your purchase includes a Celestron Limited Lifetime US Warranty & US-based expert tech support.
That uneven distribution helps explain the shower’s history of dramatic exceptions. EarthSky recounts several thousand meteors per hour during the 1933 and 1946 storms, and more than 600 per hour reported by European observers in 2011. Those are historical reports, not evidence that another storm is due in 2026.
Where should you look, and how should you watch?
The shower’s radiant—the apparent point from which the meteors seem to emerge—is in Draco in the northern sky. But meteors can streak across many parts of the sky, so scan a broad view rather than staring at the constellation. The Draconids are best placed for Northern Hemisphere observers; farther south, Draco may be low or below the horizon, limiting the view.

- Choose a dark location with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky.
- Go out around nightfall on October 8; the radiant is high around evening, making early-night viewing practical.
- Give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, then watch the sky broadly. NASA’s advice is: “Find a dark spot, let your eyes adjust, and watch for meteors streaking from anywhere across the sky.”
- Be patient. The expected rate is low, and clouds or nearby lights can make meteors harder to spot.
You do not need a telescope or binoculars: unaided eyes cover more sky. The near-new Moon should also mean little moonlight interference; the new Moon occurs October 10 at 15:50 UTC.

NASA’s October 5, 2026 skywatching guide provides a practical viewing time and a casual-observer estimate. EarthSky supplies an ideal-dark-sky rate estimate and historical context. The IMO calendar gives a predicted maximum and ZHR notation. NASA’s separate 2026 meteoroid forecast explicitly predicts no outburst, but it was written for low-Earth-orbit risk assessment, not as a naked-eye viewing guide; its meteoroid-flux figures should not be treated as a count of visible meteors.
