How do I stop my e-bike being stolen at work?
Build security into the whole workday: choose a sound parking location, secure the bike to something fixed, make removable parts harder to take, and keep information that could help identify it. Police guidance from the UK and Northern Ireland recommends using visible cycle parking and securing the frame and wheels with quality locks. Police.uk bike security advice and PSNI e-bike theft prevention guidance provide practical recommendations; they are not controlled tests of lock products.
Before you commute
- Photograph the bike from several angles. Record its make, model, colour, frame number, battery serial number if present, and distinctive features.
- Keep proof of purchase and ownership somewhere you can access if the bike is stolen.
- Register the bike with a recognised bicycle database and consider security marking. Registration helps identify property; it does not physically protect the bike or guarantee recovery.
- Choose a high-security D-lock or U-lock that fits both the bike and the stands you use. Consider carrying a second lock of a different type. For high-value e-bikes, PSNI points to high security ratings such as Sold Secure Diamond; check current ratings and fit before choosing a lock.
Choose the parking spot
Prefer recognised cycle parking in a busy, well-lit, overlooked place, ideally covered by CCTV. Check that the stand is firmly fixed and that a thief cannot lift the bike off it, remove the stand, or easily use the surrounding structure to attack the lock. An indoor room or cycle cage is not automatically secure: find out how access is controlled and how the rack is secured. If you have a choice, avoid leaving a valuable bike in exactly the same public place every day; PSNI warns that a repeated routine can draw attention.
Lock the bike to the stand
- Position the bike close to the stand so there is little room to manoeuvre the locks or apply leverage.
- Use a D-lock to secure the frame and, where the lock allows, a wheel to the fixed stand. Keep the lock off the ground.
- Use a second quality lock of a different type to secure the other wheel and frame to the stand. Adapt the arrangement to the stand and lock sizes, but do not leave a wheel unsecured if you can avoid it.
- Check that the bike cannot be lifted free and that the stand itself cannot be easily moved or dismantled.
Two different locks can require a thief to use different tools or techniques, but they do not make theft impossible. Choose locks appropriate to the bike’s value and parking conditions; a rating is a guide to resistance, not a promise against every attack.

Should I take my e-bike battery with me?
Take the removable battery with you when practical, particularly if the bike will be unattended for a long period. If it must stay on the bike, make sure it is secured by its battery lock and consider a supplemental cable lock. A cable is an extra deterrent for the battery, not a replacement for the primary lock securing the bike. Remove portable displays, lights, and other easy-to-carry valuables too, if practical.
Battery theft is a distinct risk from theft of the whole bike. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department recorded 330 recognised electric-assist bicycle battery theft cases in Tokyo during 2024; its page, updated April 14, 2025, says roughly 70% occurred on residential premises. Which security setup should I use?

There is no evidence here to name a single best lock or product: the police sources offer practical advice, not comparative lock testing. Match the lock’s rating and physical fit to your bike and where you park it.
Does bike insurance cover theft from work?
Do not assume that a home contents or cycle policy covers theft from workplace parking. Coverage depends on the insurer and policy, including the permitted location, required lock or security rating, how the bike was secured, and any claim conditions or excess. Check the policy wording or ask the insurer specifically about your workplace’s parking facility before relying on cover. There is no universal coverage rule.

What should I do if my e-bike is stolen?
- Report the theft promptly through the local police process. Procedures vary by location.
- Provide the frame number, photos, registration details, make, model, colour, distinctive features, and where and when the bike was parked.
- Update the bike’s registry status and contact your insurer if applicable, following the policy’s reporting and claim requirements.
These details give police and any bicycle registry useful information to identify the bike. Avon and Somerset Police bike protection guidance also recommends keeping identifying information. In a Merseyside Police statement about Operation Gears, Superintendent Phil Mullally encouraged owners to use BikeRegister, high-quality locks and GPS tracking devices.
