To update the name on your Aadhaar, visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre with the original supporting documents for your specific change. UIDAI’s online-update guidance covers address updates; name changes are handled at a centre. The operator submits the request and gives you an acknowledgement with a Update Request Number (URN) to track, but UIDAI must validate the request before it is approved.
Choose the right process for your name change
First identify whether you need a minor spelling correction, a surname change, or a first or full name change. The supporting evidence depends on the type of change, so check UIDAI’s current list of supporting documents for your case before travelling.
- Minor correction: Visit a centre for a spelling correction or other minor name change.
- First or full name change: UIDAI’s FAQ calls for a State or Union Government Gazette notification and an old proof of identity showing the name currently recorded in Aadhaar. The address in the Gazette should match the address in your Aadhaar record.
Do not assume that a document accepted for one kind of update will be accepted for another. Use the live UIDAI document list as the authority for ordinary updates.
How to submit a name update at an Aadhaar centre
- Check the required evidence. Confirm the acceptable document for your exact change on UIDAI’s supporting-document list.
- Visit a centre that offers the update service. Bring your Aadhaar details and original supporting documents. You can use any centre offering the required update; it does not have to be the centre where you enrolled. The operator scans originals and should return them to you.
- Check the entry before confirming. Review the spelling and language of the requested name with the operator. Operators handle form entry, spelling, language and transliteration, so check how the name appears before the request is submitted.
- Keep your acknowledgement and URN. UIDAI provides an acknowledgement receipt with an Update Request Number (URN), which you can use to track the request.
- Check the result. UIDAI verifies and validates submitted requests. A receipt confirms submission, not approval.
UIDAI’s update guidance describes online self-service for address updates; for a name change, use a centre.

What documents do I need for a name update?
Minor spelling correction or surname update
Check UIDAI’s current acceptable-document list for the precise update you want. Bring the required original evidence for scanning. UIDAI’s document requirements vary by case, so a general identity document should not be treated as automatically sufficient.
First or full name change
UIDAI’s FAQ says to provide a Gazette notification issued by a State or Union Government and an old proof of identity bearing the name already recorded in Aadhaar. What if you have already updated your name twice?
UIDAI limits standard name updates to twice in a lifetime. If you need another change, follow the exception route rather than assuming a routine request will be accepted.
- Visit an Aadhaar centre with the prescribed Gazette notification and supporting evidence for your case.
- If UIDAI rejects the request because the limit has been exceeded, contact UIDAI at 1947 or email UIDAI with your EID and supporting documents. The FAQ says to request exception processing through the regional office.
For a first or full name change, the exception guidance lists the Gazette notification and old photo identity proof; depending on the reason, a marriage certificate, divorce decree or adoption certificate may also be relevant. How long does an Aadhaar name update take, and what does it cost?
UIDAI says that normally 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days. This is an aggregate service benchmark, not a deadline or guarantee for an individual request. Use the URN on your acknowledgement to track your request.
Update charges apply. UIDAI directs applicants to its current charge information; the fee is also displayed at the centre and on the acknowledgement. Confirm the current amount with UIDAI or the centre before your visit.

What happens after the update is approved?
Your Aadhaar number remains the same. For a name change, UIDAI sends the updated Aadhaar letter to the address in your Aadhaar record; you can also download e-Aadhaar after the update is generated.
Special note for a child’s name change
A 2026 amendment to the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations describes a Head of Family-based route for specified limited changes to a minor’s name. The listed cases include adding, deleting or changing a surname; a phonetic spelling change; or expanding or abbreviating the name while keeping the primary name unchanged. The supporting birth certificate or guardianship document must bear the revised name. Because implementation details may depend on UIDAI’s current procedures, confirm the applicable process with UIDAI before applying.
