Physical AI describes AI systems that sense and act in the real world through machines such as robots and autonomous vehicles. Generative AI typically produces digital content—such as text, images, audio, or video. The categories can overlap: a generative or multimodal model may help a robot interpret a scene or plan, while the larger system’s ability to act in a physical environment is what makes it physical AI.
What is physical AI?
Physical AI is an emerging, industry-used label for AI connected to embodied machines that perceive their surroundings and take actions in them. A text-only chatbot, by itself, is not physical AI: it returns a digital response without sensing or changing the physical environment.
The term is not a universally standardized technical category. NVIDIA uses it for AI that enables autonomous machines to understand and interact with the physical world. In an Associated Press interview, robotics researcher Martial Hebert described physical and embodied AI as an evolution of robotics, while noting that definitions can differ. That is one perspective, not proof of a single industry-wide definition.
How does physical AI differ from generative AI?
The simplest distinction is the system’s effect: generative AI creates digital outputs, while physical AI is defined by a system’s connection to sensing and acting in a physical environment. These are not mutually exclusive labels; a physical-AI system can include generative AI.

| Dimension | Generative AI | Physical AI |
|---|---|---|
| Typical result | Digital content, such as text, images, audio, or video. | Actions in an environment, carried out through a robot, vehicle, or other physical system. |
| Inputs | Prompts and digital media, depending on the model. | Sensor and environment data; a system may also use text, images, or other model inputs. |
| Physical embodiment | Not required. | A physical machine is in the action loop. |
| What must be evaluated | Whether the generated content is suitable for its intended use. | Whether behavior works under real-world conditions and meets relevant safety constraints, in addition to evaluating any digital outputs. |
The final row reflects a practical difference in validation, not a formal standard that defines either category. A robot using AI is not necessarily generally intelligent; it may be designed for a narrow task.
Can generative AI control a robot?
It can contribute to a system that controls a robot, but a generative model alone is not the whole physical-AI system. A model might interpret an instruction or help plan what to do. The larger system still needs to connect that output to the machine, use information about the current environment, and carry out actions through its hardware.

For example, a language model could help translate a human request into a task plan. The robot would still need to perceive relevant objects and conditions, execute appropriate movements, and respond when the physical situation differs from expectations. The model’s presence does not establish that the robot can safely or reliably perform every task.
Is physical AI just robotics?
Robotics is a central example, but physical AI is used more broadly to describe AI connected to physical systems, including autonomous vehicles and industrial automation. The label emphasizes the AI system’s perception-and-action relationship with the physical world; it does not name a single robot design, model type, or level of capability.

Because usage varies, it is more useful to ask what a particular system senses, what it can act on, and how its behavior is tested than to infer capability from the label alone.
What are examples of physical AI?
- Robots: machines that use sensors and AI to perform tasks in a physical setting.
- Autonomous vehicles: systems that interpret their surroundings and make driving-related actions.
- Industrial automation: AI-enabled systems used in manufacturing or logistics environments.
- Humanoid systems: human-shaped robots, an area included in recent company announcements.
NVIDIA’s January 5, 2026 announcement described partner activity involving robotics, industrial automation, humanoid systems, and autonomous vehicles. Those company announcements establish that organizations announced or were developing activity; they do not, on their own, prove broad deployment, general availability, or performance at scale.

How are physical-AI systems developed and tested?
Development can combine simulation, data generation, model or policy training, and testing on real hardware. NVIDIA describes approaches that include neural graphics, synthetic data, physics-based simulation, reinforcement learning, and AI reasoning. Its technical materials present a training, simulation, and inference stack for areas such as transportation, manufacturing, logistics, and robotics. These are NVIDIA’s approaches, not a universal recipe for every physical-AI project.
Simulation lets developers work with virtual environments before or alongside hardware testing, but success in simulation does not by itself establish real-world performance. A sim-to-real workflow moves from simulated work to physical robots and checks how behavior carries over. NVIDIA’s learning materials describe courses involving robot simulation, robot-policy training, ROS 2, real robots, and sim-to-real workflows; a SO-101 course overview describes a path from simulation to a robot acting autonomously. Course descriptions explain what the learning path covers, not independent benchmarks of a robot’s capabilities.
